01 t and c 3.8 transmission
When I put it into gear after its warmed up, hot, it sounds like there is a plastic gear not catching for a second or 2, same for in reverse. Does anyone know what this is? Thanks. It has about 8000 miles on new transmission, 80,000 on van. No codes. PCM is newer as well. Thanks

Re: 01 t and c 3.8 transmission
I hate to give you something to worry about, but it could be trouble. Most shops do not rebuild these correctly. This trans needs the tollerances set correctly to function correctly and last. I know the sound you are describing. I'm not certian what causes it. I just rebuilt mine and it did it before I rebuilt it. I found the clutch stack up way too loose and the end play was way over tollerance. Now that everything is correct, it doesn't make the noise anymore. The only thing I can think of that could make this niose is everything compressing or opening when loading or unloading (I.E. putting it into drive or park)

Re: 01 t and c 3.8 transmission
I talked to the dealer here that installed it and they said if it needed reset they would have done it when it was replaced, and if it did then they did reset the limits. They also told me that the PCM would tell them when the last flash was done. If I do need this done should I go back to the same dealer or go to another? I just don't trust them like I used to, been told a couple different stories. Ever since I got the transmission done it has shifted the same way the other one did when it was bad. Any advice would be greatly appreciated. Thanks

Re: 01 t and c 3.8 transmission
I would try a different dealer. A lot of dealers use area trans shops because it's cheaper. That is why they couldn't tell you anything. I'm sure they don't want to do the rebuild themselves because it takes a few special tools and it takes time to do it right. This isn't a difficult trans to do, it just is a little time consuming.
A dealer that is willing to check it with a DRB scan tool would be a good choise. This tool will give them the condition of each clutch pack (including the percent of wear, the solenoid pack, and all of the sensors along with the version of code in the TCM and when it was flashed last. If they find that the trans needs repair or has something wrong, i would go after the first dealer through Chrysler. There is no reason that they should give you a bad trans. Chrysler sells certified rebuilt transmissions complete with factory warrentee. There are many dealers that use area shops around me. One shop is the one that rebuilt mine 3 yrs, & 28,000 mi ago. If it had been done right, I wouldn't have needed to rebuild it again. They also used the wrong fluid. These transaxles need ATF+4 to work right. My brother has 144,000 on his wife's 01 Town and Country without any problems. |

Re: 01 t and c 3.8 transmission
The dealer here told me that they needed to remove the transmission lines to test what you say a DRB scan tool will do. I will surely take your advice. I bought the transmission from a dealer up north online, they shipped it to the dealer here that installed it. Dealer here wanted 3200 for a rebuilt, other dealer sold me one for 1600 and shipping was free. It has the Mopar warranty too. I will take it to another dealer tomorrow, will have to go to Melbourne. Are dealers the only ones that can check this, or am I just best off at the dealer concerning this? Thank you for all your help.
