Engine Tick...How To Fix?

I am getting a very pronounced, and annoying, tick from the top of the engine. The tick is consistent with the speed of the engine. To me this says Valve/Lifter issues. This started rather recently. I added Rislone engine treatment with the oil change last week. It nearly eliminated the tick for about two days before it returned. I would believe that a valve adjustment would be in order. However, neither the owners manual nor the Haynes manual says anything of valve adjustments or clearances. Are these self-adjusting valves that should be left alone? Or should I just take off the valve cover and have a look?

it would be helpful if you give details of engine mileage etc on vehicle questions. but generally if you develop lifter noise in an engine and its all lifters the PCV and hoses are the problem. crankcase gases and water vapor create sludges that cause lifters to not hold oil. if your oil pressure is low because its plugged with sludge or just bad would also cause this. when ever changing oil engine must be at normal hot temperature or sludge does not come out..........

Re: Engine Tick...How To Fix?

The engine is a 2.2L with 148K miles on it. The tick really started after a plug fouled and was misfiring. Is there something I can do to remedy this problem?

put 4-5oz of marvel mystery oil in engine oil if problem goes away you have carbon in lifters this happens with your type of problem as well as others. after 500mi with engine hot change oil and you should be ok. do not put more than a few oz of marvel in oil as this will be too much we dont want to free up too much crankcase goo at once, as this will cause other problems. if this engine uses a lot of oil pcv hoses and valve and intake for operation and flow.

Re: Engine Tick...How To Fix?

I use to own a 1992 Dodge Stealth R/T with the 3.0L DOHC engine that was famous for lifter tick when the engine got a few(148,000)miles on it. Always heard good things about Lucas oil treatment. I tried that and the lifter tick was gone. Also owned a 1995 Dodge Spirit with the 3.0L and it also was known for it's lifter tick. That tick started at 160,000 miles. Lucas fixed that also and sold the car with over 220,000 miles on it. Hope this helps.

Re: Engine Tick...How To Fix?

You know there are two products I would use with a problem like this. First and foremost would be GM's Engine Oil Supplement. I have used this where I had engine noises and this stuff works. It depends on how bad the noise is, but as long as its not anything mechanically, this stuff will do the job. Second, and stuff that I have recently tried in a family car is a product that is called Auto-Rx. You have to order this stuff, as it isn't(to my knowledge) sold at any store. I have had good results with this too. The GM EOS though, without a doubt will help. Good Luck!

Re: Engine Tick...How To Fix?

Hey,

I have had a lifter noise at start up in the past with my 4.3L Blazer and SeaFoam has eliminated it. Haven't had the ticking at startup for about 5 months, it happened 4 or 5 times in the course of 2-3 weeks before I went to the parts store and bought a can.
