Strange engine noise
Hi, I've taken notice of some noises that my car makes when running. There is the usual tapping noise that I kind of know what it is. But there are other strange noises that the engine makes that I don't know where its comes from. One noise I can hear when the car is in idle or when I slow down, its like a "sizziling" noise. And then there is a little faint "rattle" noise that I hear when I accelerate from a stop. Anyone know what this could be?
I'll post a video later to better inform about the situation. Thanks. |

Re: Strange engine noise
Here is a link to the video of my car. If you could please watch it and tell me what the problem could be. I know it sounds bad, but with a little treatment oil the tapping noise goes away, but its the sizzling sounds that scare me, I think it might be an open electrical connection thats making that sound. Thanks for any help.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AKGRjexzqFA I may post another video later when the tapping noise is gone. |

Re: Strange engine noise
That sizzling noise could be a vacuum leak. Does it make a hissing sound. It will be most noticable at idle and can be the reason the car hesitates. Locate the vacuum hose at the intake manifold and back track it to find the leak.

Re: Strange engine noise
Look at the back of the throttle body at the vacuum hoses that run to the PCV valve. These are bad about collapsing and getting a hols in it. It could also be part of the tapping you hear. Can cause the PCV to bounce and cause a tapping noise.

Re: Strange engine noise
Is there possibly an exhaust leak too at the manifold?

Re: Strange engine noise
Really, you can tell that from the video? I actualy use 5-30 synthetic oil. I haven't done a spark plug check yet.

Re: Strange engine noise
Pull PCV and hold thumb over it to see if noise goes away. Looks like the valve is fairly new, but if there is not enough vacuum to it, it will rattle and sound like the lifters sre wanting to come out of the engine.

Re: Strange engine noise
Recently days ago I changed the PCV valve, but the tapping is usual, I can actualy on seem to get rid of it if I use some Roselin Treatment oil. But the PCV valve seems fine, no jumping or movement. I checked 1, 2, 3 and 4 sparkplugs to see if they sparked and yes it all checks fine. I havent done an intake check to see if there is a leak or a vacume. But when I was checking the engine the buzzing or sizziling sound was constant and I could hear that it came from or near the alternator area. I had a different alternator before and it still made the noise, but with a new one the noise is still there. It sound like if you would hear in the movies where electricity is shown buzzing around. Thanks for all the input. Does anyone know if a major teardown of the engine has to be done? Maby the camshafts or a connecting piston rod might be the cause of the noise?

Re: Strange engine noise
thats a big investment... what year and how many miles? I would check everything twice before you do an engine job

Re: Strange engine noise
Take the belt off the engine and run it just a couple of minutes and see if the noise is still there. If noise is gone, belt, dirty pulleys, idler or tensioner bearings will likely be the cause. If noise is still there, it is internal.

CHECK your rad to see if its drinking anti freeze.I was trying to get back to you but got buzy at work. That sizziling noise could be a cam follower going away.Top end of your engine could be plugged with wax buildup IN SIDE YOUR VALVE COVERS.If its drinking anti freeze kiss it good bye.MAJOR WORK COMING
