Driver's side power seat - 1996 Tahoe - suggestions for fixing?

I've got a '96 Tahoe that's been the subject of a few other posts, I just bought it recently and I knew that the seat motors weren't working.

I removed the motor yesterday, I should have taken the whole seat out first but as I was trying to figure out how to get it out without removing the seat I undid the four long screws that hold the motors in place. So, the three motors fell off, and I ended up taking the whole seat out and undoing the seat motor bracked from the "gearbox" and rails.

They're at the local shop to see if they could be rebuilt, but it didn't dawn on me until today that I should have plugged the wiring harness back in (the previous owner had unplugged it when the seat stopped working) and seen what happened when the buttons were pushed.

Short of paying $493 plus tax from the dealer for a new seat rail, or a small miracle of finding a seat/seat rail at a junkyard, any suggestions on checking out the seat gears if the motors are indeed fixed & working?
