Speedometer-Cable or No Cable?

2001 S-10-4.3L-47K Does the 01 speedometer have a cable or is it electrical? The reason I ask is from day 1 when I start it up there is a "radio static" noise that is coming from behind the speedometer/tac gauges. When I give it just a little gas the noise stops so i'm guessing the problem is with the speedometer. Thanks!

Re: Speedometer-Cable or No Cable?

The speedometer does not use a cable. On 2WD the VSS, (Vehicle Speed Sensor) is located in the transmission extension housing. On 4WD the VSS is located near the rear output shaft in the transfer case. The VSS sends a pulse signal to the ECM and the ECM sends a signal to the instrument cluster. Might be a vacuum leak for the HVAC system, does the air flow come out the proper places?

Re: Speedometer-Cable or No Cable?

Yes everything else works. I can also make it stop when it's in park. Anything over 1500rpm's and the noise stops. But the noise does sound like radio static. I know certain noises are hard to explain but that's exactly what it sounds like.
