Wiring Harness WAS P1478 and WAS Flasher fuse and Blower motor
Well I found the culprit causing all my weird electrical issues. The wiring harness that runs behind the front driver side fender was rubbing up against the fender bracket. There are a number of bare burnt wires there now. I think it has fried my PCM too as when I hooked the up battery heard a pop and smoke coming from the PCM.
Is the replacement of the harness something I can do myself once the fender has been removed? |

Re: Wiring Harness WAS P1478 and WAS Flasher fuse and Blower motor
Well I have the fender off and all the melted wires separated. Problem is that about three or 4 of them are white. I cant tell for sure where they match up though. Is white wire a common feed?

Oh, gosh, there are different color commons on these, a handful of different colors. I will look into that later for you, I have to replace a water pump on the 01. I don't know your year but PCM's have a special emissions warranty on it, IF it is less than eight years old and less than 80,000 miles on it you get a new one free at the dealer. The dealer here wanted 1000.00 for it, I paid for mine at another dealer not knowing this but ended up getting a refund from Chrysler.

Mines a 98. I got a PCM at a wrecker $100.
Hears a link to a pic of the wires after I cut away the tape wrap. http://shutterbug27.blogspot.com/ |

Re: Wiring Harness WAS P1478 and WAS Flasher fuse and Blower motor
oh, goodness, that doesn't look good. I have ran into something that may help, I had this problem on a park avenue I used to own, harness by the exhaust, 64 total wires ran through this harness. there were 5 black common wires all the same and didn't know what went where. I traced it back and found that all 5 wires were soldered to one bigger black wire. so, it was trace the other wires going the other way, or just hook them up being they were all the same, I wasn't going to replace the harness cause of the difficulty. I hooked the wires up, black to black, and everything worked. Its possible this may work for you. if you do try this don't cover anything back up till you know everything works, just in case. Do get a second opinion before you try this, hopefully someone will post on this.

Re: Wiring Harness WAS P1478 and WAS Flasher fuse and Blower motor
It turns out after I cleaned up all the wires, only 2 are white. So that narrows it down. I may be able to match up the correct ones without too much difficulty. Its a tedious job repairing these wires. 22 in all. And I have to work outside in the winter ..wish me luck LOL. I will take your recommendation and not cover anything up when I am done though.

Re: Wiring Harness WAS P1478 and WAS Flasher fuse and Blower motor
An update. I cleaned up the mess that was the burnt wires. I repaired all the bad ones. All reconnected. Man that took a while. Put in the new ECU from the wrecker. Van started right away but would not keep running. I figured new computer has to learn. I did this 3-4 times and it would start and then quit right away. Then on the 5th try, nothing. Wont even turn over. No click of the solenoid or anything. All accesaries and lights work. But no start. Swapped batteries with another known good battery and same thing. I am stumped. I ran out of daylight to test anything else. Any ideas? I am very frustrated now.

Re: Wiring Harness WAS P1478 and WAS Flasher fuse and Blower motor
the vin in the pcm doesnt match the vin to the security system and has to be matched up with a computer [drbIII from chrysler] meybe a local shop can do it to.

Re: Wiring Harness WAS P1478 and WAS Flasher fuse and Blower motor
Could it be that the PCM I got was from a van that DID have a security system and that by putting it mine that does NOT, it would cause the no start? Can I take the PCM to a dealer to have them program it to my VIN with it out of the vehicle?

Re: Wiring Harness WAS P1478 and WAS Flasher fuse and Blower motor
UPDATE
Success. The first PCM I put in must have been from a van with security system. And my Van did not have one, thus it shutting down when trying to start. I tracked down another one with the same part number as mine. and VROOM. |
