intermittent buzzing from dashboard

My '96 Metro has started to buzz slightly & intermittently while driving, and the noise appears to come from behind the driver's side dashboard. It could very well be something as innocuous as a cold or worn speedo cable, but I wonder if anyone else has heard such noises. It would be more concerning if it were a relay.

Performance does not seem to be affected, and the noise seems independent of gear-selection, clutch engagement/disengagement, RPM and throttle-pressure.

Thanks,
Mike

Re: intermittent buzzing from dashboard

i'd guess the speedo ..... but i once had a faulty warning 'buzzer' ...not in the dash but lower .... that would intermittently half work and sound like you describe .... a long shot.

Re: intermittent buzzing from dashboard

Thanks, red. In your case, was it the same warning buzzer you'd hear if you left the keys in the ignition (OFF) and the door were open?

Re: intermittent buzzing from dashboard

i think there is only one ... and i've forgotten the exact circumstances that triggered the buzzer. it was related to the push button door switch too. both had been inactive so long that they were intermittent i think.

do you get the sound when stationary?

Re: intermittent buzzing from dashboard

good. another indication it's the speedo cable though it could be the speedometer itself. it's difficult to reach but you might try to move the cable to a slightly different position as it leaves the back of the speedometer. i forget if it has a screw on connector but if you can reach it try to tighten it. if all else fails, it's not the worst job to remove the inst cluster.

.... and it still could be something else. blower running? radio?

Thanks, red. Will check out the speedo cable.
