Remove undercoating

Hi all,

I recently bought a Very Original 1986 Mustang GT from the original owner.
Nice car, 79,000 miles. It had been rust-proofed when new. The engine compartment is a sticky mess.
Are there chemicals out there to remove the rust-proofing without damaging the paint and other components?

Thanks,

Dale

Re: Remove undercoating

Hmm...I don't know of any, but if I were facing your problem I would try acetone on a rag. It works on most stuff, so would probably remove the undercoating. BUT, and this is a big one, acetone WILL dissolve paint so you will have to be very careful. I would try it.

Re: Remove undercoating

Try a bug and tar remover and a throwaway plastic putty knife. That should get it moving. You could heat it up with a heatgun too, but take care not to blister the paint under it.
