Bad taillight sockets or a bad spot in the harness

thanks for the post. i contacted the previous owner and he told me that he had an aftermarket trailor wiring harness installed about 3 years ago. he informed me that the truck has since then had this problem, but only when it was hooked to a trailor. i inspected the aftermarket harness and it has a bad connection and a bad ground. i also noticed that it was the wrong plug for the truck. i removed it and now have no more prolbems.

Re: problem with tailights on 93 splash
My 93 4X4 developed a problem too. It kept blowing the brake light fuse, which also disabled the rear ABS. The dealership found that a wire harness (somewhere above the parking brake pedal) was not routed properly from the factory and had rubber through. They found the problem and fixed it within an hour. I don't know if this a common Ranger problem or not, nut it couldn't hurt to check.
