Hello to all 1984 733i drivers
Hi I just bought a 1984 733i today and my girlfriend and I absolutly love it!It's got 170,000 miles on it with new tires, brakes, battery. The engine is nice and it drives and picks up great. This is my first car!I'm 28 but I live in Chicago and the subway is fine. The touchpanel where the clock display is located is out,any ideas on how to repair?Does anyone have a pdf file of the manual/electrical manual for this car?Anyway I'm just introducing myself and I hope to converse in the future.Matt.

:flash: They are great cars. I just purchased mine a couple of weeks ago. My husband and I love it. I had new tires put on yesterday, on the 28th I will have new bushings put in along with a water pump, then new hangers for my muffler, brakes, valve job and motor mounts. This car had been in storage for about 6 years. It hugs the road and handles like you wouldn't believe.
Congrats to us both for picking such great cars.

Did you ever get the fix for the OBC? I have a 84 733i as well, and I love it. I do have the problem with the light on the computer though. Looking for help! Does anyone have the pdf file of the manual/electrical manual? Or where to find it?

Often the OBC is working but the illumination back lights are out. If you can still see the display at night and the clock works, etc., you can fix it by replacing the illumination lights.
For the older cars, Bavarian Autosport had the procedure to change the bulbs in their most recent newsletter and I'm sure they'd send you a copy. You can contact them a 800-535-2002. The bulb assembly itself costs about $25 from the dealer. For E32 cars (1988-1994) the fix is here at Gale's page: http://www.nmia.com/~dgnrg/page_2.htm Make sure to use the bulbs that Gale lists. The others will work but only for a week or two. BTW, bulbs are cheap, less than $1. |

A couple years ago the backlight went out in the OBC of my '86 528e; I put the new one in myself (not that hard), but got it from the dealer--libertylover you are right, it cost me something like $27-28.
I too have heard multiple places that you can make it yourself for less than $1. I figured I'd screw something up so I went the dealer route. |

Re: Hello to all 1984 733i drivers
I meant the bulbs are less than $1 from the BMW dealer! They changed the design of the OBC to have a different backlight system at some point. My '89 325is had the kind that costs around $20-30 but my '93 740iL has a different design and these are the bulbs that are less than $1. Sorry for the confusion.

Oh, OK. Wow, I thought BMW dealers had a policy of not selling ANYTHING for less than $30! (Hint: do NOT buy Lexol leather conditioner from a BMW dealer unless you enjoy paying more for the same product).

Re: Hello to all 1984 733i drivers
Glad to help. Again, follow the link in my earlier post to get the right part number for the bulbs since the dealer's computer system lists the wrong bulb (6V bulb-won't last long). I learned this the hard way.
