I'd rather see us get rid of currency altogether. I think it's going to happen...as more and more things become available free (mp3's, downloadble movies, apps, games, etc), the need and even desire for money lessens...of course our generation still wants money to buy a house or car, etc, but every year money is more pointless. I'd like to see the world get to the point where we don't need it...people work for something to do, not to make money. People are far less greedy...no urge to be on top of the money pile. Kinda like Star Trek

If this actually goes through I can picture a lot of unhappy business owner's due to the fact that a lot of them do under the table business(cash only),
the government is really trying to pull a fast one on us because this way they can get rid of all the illegal trade such as drugs, but also how will it make it possible to buy things second hand or lend people in need money I really cannot picture the government actually doing this.

The biggest obstacle to a society with no money is those who already have all the money, and wish to keep it that way.

Since our society is based on money, we must first change out society before we can eliminate money.

Althought if you eliminate the money first the society will change. Sure there'll be bitchin and complaining, but when their money is no longer accepted anywhere there's not really anything they can do about it except go with the flow.

A brilliant idea. But in todays techno-cynical culture, it'll never become internationally accepted.

Regarding that article:

In NZ we have EFTPOS (Electronic Finance Transfer Payment On Site or something). Basically this is your normal ATM card, but you swipe it at the shop you're at in an EFTPOS machine (usually attached to the till) which looks very similar to that Mondeo machine. You swipe your card, choose the account, and enter your pin..the money gets taken out of your account. People are walking around with a lot less cash in their pockets these days. Of course, not all places have eftpos machines...

Not that I agree on it, but prostitution would take a big nose dive as well.

Pittsburgh is headed more and more towards a currency-free/ mechanized society. Nearly every store has EFT-enabled credit card "Zons" and it works like all those shown above. But not only that, but the largest local grocery chain now has "electronic tellers" that let you check yourself out. It's rather hard to cheat the system and not scan something b/c there are all sorts of sensors and weight readers that ensure you do things right. I actually prefer to use that instead of going to some incompetent cashier.

I have always wanted to see a society without cash and the like. It would solve some problems, but I can see how it would cause a ton of others.

A cashless society will never exist, IMO.

But these smart cards intrigue me; an alternate use for my DirectTV card programmer; they use the same tech, u would just need to break the encryption. And the best part is, no one has money taken from them. Money is just pumped into the system. Everyone wins!

EFTPOS, which incidently stands for Electronic Fund Transfer Point Of Sale, is not what this is about. This is about a card with no security, no personal information that functions just like cash, without having to carry it. And Chris - don't you think it would be much easier to copy paper/plastic money than break card encryption? But it is an excellent point abou the new kinds of fraud that would be invented.
