Exclamation Questions About NOS

Alright, I got this brilliant idea the other day, that I'm going to go buy a cheap 1980's Model Import for pretty cheap, and make it a sleeper, not my permanent car, but just for fun at the track. It's going to be a cheap car, so Im probably going to upgrade the tires, suspension, an Intake, an exhaust, and then hook up a small shot of NOS into it. My question is, why are some recommended things I should upgrade in the engine for pretty cheap before using the NOS. I know im going to replace all the gaskets, a new fuel pump, and some new Injectors.. but is there anything else?

well depending on how big of a shot you use you might want reworked internals.

Also nitrous for track aplications. You'll run dry in no time. Get a turbo instead.

Fuel pump, injectors, ignition, spark plugs, wires, fuel filter. That should be good. Also how big of a shot do you want to run?

One important thing about nitrous...

Is that it is an oxidant not a fuel.

So to extract any significant value out of adding it to the intake charge you'll need to be able to supply sufficient fuel to do so.

If you don't you run the risk of running the engine too lean which will result in some undesired consequences ie the combustion chamber will get really, really hot and you run the risk of the engine seizing (ask anyone who runs a 2-stroke go kart about what happens.)

forged pistons-- low compression ratio --upgraded spark--timing advance?!?
and time and most of all patience--------unless you pay a good shop to hook it up.

you can also get some nitrous with a piggyback so it will tell the ecu to provide more fuel so you won't run lean. i know venom makes one.

With a 100 shot I'd look into definitely upgrading the rods just to be on the safe side. If you're trying to scimp on the money, then I'd say don't worry about the pistons or crank. With a 100 shot the crank should be ok and we all know stock pistons are harder than forged, don't we?? So you won't have to worry about those too much either IF YOU ARE CAREFUL! Don't rush through the tune!

I have to say I speak from expierence of thinking I could just throw a dry shot in a motor without building it up and I paid. I have to say that if you want to do it cheap dont do NOS, your gonna end up just blowing the money you could spend on other hp gaining part on the parts that you break or ruin with your nitrous. If you plan to runt hat kind of dry shot you defidently need to upgrade your fuel system, and at the same time you need to make sure your block and bottom end can handle the force. I dont want to hear that you had a piston blow threw your hood while your racing. IF your gonna do a early 80 Import i recommend a hatch back of some sort with a motor swap. DO the basics (intake, header exhaust, cam gears, pulleys,) then decide how serious you are about it and if you still want NOS do your piston rods rings, and fuel and sparks. Personally id just turbo charge it.

Piston through the hood...

It's unlikely but if during the upstroke the connecting rod failed then it's possible given enough crankshaft revolutions and a heavy enough piston that it would be possible for the piston to exit the engine. It's pretty unlikely it would go directly through the head but I have seen exits out of the side of the block.

If an engine is sufficiently canted/slanted then it's possible that the piston could exit out of the side of the block and penetrate the hood.

One exception to this is Top Fuel dragsters running high concentrations of nitro-methane where I have seen pistons do a pyrotechnic display out the top of the engine.

Run nitromethane, and build your internals. That is one way to get more bang for your buck. 40% of your charge mixture will be fuel, as opposed to the 7% with gasoline. Unfortunately it costs $8 a gallon.
