Possibly an expensive yet neat exhaust setup?
They were showing some type of exhaust setup I think on TNN that you could just flip a switch and it will disconnect the exhaust pipes to the mufflers and make it so you're just using straight pipes from the headers. Sounded like a damn cool way setup, when you're ready to race just flip the switch and have the pipes disconnect. Time to drive it on the street? Have it reconnect them and reduce the noise pollution.
Anyone heard of anything like this?

Redneck!!
That would be an awesome little toy though. Already got a throtty idle from whatever muffler someone puts on. Then a guy pulls up next to you and revs. You unhook it and your vehicle gets even louder, scare the shit out of the guy next to you haha.

Haha...
Funny you ask, I was just discussing this with my racing buddies. Yeah its a badass set up, in the JEG'S cataloge theres various types of 'cut out' pipes similar. Most of them are done manually meaning you have to reach down there and unscrew a few wing nuts and take a backing plate off. Another set up is done with a lever that you pull I THINK next to the header or pipe which moves a baffle making it Open headers. This new system which really isnt new, other companies sell similar things with electric motors that open a baffle in the pipe itself. But what you're speaking of is a special header that has a electric door that opens on command from a dash mounted switch. Its a very cool set up... Most V8s with no back pressure have crap for torque below 2000rpm. But once they get above that its like hitting 'Vtec' it just pulls like a MOFO. I believe those headers cost in the area of 300-400 bones.

Yeap, been around for a while now. Electronic cut-outs. Bunch of guys have them over on camaroz28.com. Sound/look pretty nice too.

My friend's uncle has that lever set-up on his 72' Chevelle SS. I had no idea what the hell it was, and when he told me, I was like, me want! Me want!

Yeap, found it. QTP(Quick Time Performance) sells them for $135. Very affordable. Of course they make them for domestics, so the cutout flange size is 3", but if that's too large for your exhaust you can easily have a downsizing connector welded on for cheap. Anyways, here's the link....

Yeah, I have heard them before, namely on a 1970 Dodge Challenger with a 528 Hemi. He called it an electronic dump. I had always wondered about this, if it was for real or just some BS.

Yeah when I first saw it thats what it reminded me of the 1970 GTO.
It was called the Tiger Button. Though I don't think it made it so you were running open headers, just a less restrictive exhaust.

Hot Rod magazine did a test a while back on exhaust systems... Tested it with a mild 350.. Dyno'ed with open headers, true duals, true duals with h pipe, true duals with x pipe. The X pipe resulted in a bit more hp than all the other combo's, but the open headers pulled with most torque.

They did it to a truck with duel exhaust so that might be why it was more but their was so many parts commercials i probably just confussed the price

My friend's 70 Camaro Z28 ran open headers to the muffler shop getting all new exhaust put on. He said it ran like crap with open headers below 3000rpm after that it was like a bootleg version of Vtec it just pulled like a freight train. He said it was like driving a car with a really huge stall converter. Which is true, minimal back pressure to help the torque just all high end flow.
