Need help....diagnose this problem?

This morning, driving to work in the 88 Accord it suddenly started making this fairly loud, low hissing sound from the back end (sounded like a tire losing air). It lasted about 10 seconds. After that, the car began to make a "sput, sput, sput" sound from the back end when the engine was under load or at lower RPM's. These sounds seemed to be coming from the exhaust. These sounds were also accompanied by a notable loss of power (about 25% or so). Can anyone help with a diagnosis?

could be a hole in the gas tank, which is forcing it to lose pressure at a rate that the fuel pump cant keep up with. it could also be a whole in the exhaust somewhere. jack it up and try and locate the noise.
