whats the diff??

Is the front diff open when in 4lo, or is it locked like a manual hub setup? i have been seeing different answers everywhere.

Evergreen,

First, in a true 4WD transfer case, there is no torque splitting (differentiation). The transfer case once it is put in 4WD it is "locked". The torque, although reduced by the drivetrain it is now having to move, is 100% locked.

But the front diff is "open". The best thing I would suggest is a visit to my website where I have my locker section. There I give the best description I could of how each style diff works and its plusses and minuses. Then once you have read that, fire questions at us that you feel like weren't answered. You can click on my signature at the bottom and it will take you to my front page. From there go to mods and then air locker. That should tell you what you need to know.
