Okay, I'm new at all this. I just got a 2000 Civic that I want to sweeten up. I'm not looking to race, just look (and sound) a little nicer. Here's my question:
I'm looking to spend as little money as possibe. What would be the pro's (and con's) of just adding an exhaust tip? (I know, it might sound stupid, but hear me out) I want a nice deep sound, not some hi-pitched whine. I don't want it so loud that I turn every head I drive by, but just enough to have a nice hum. Do the tips just make that annoying sound? (~$30 vs. ~$300?) Yeah, I know, I'm a rookie, but help me out here, we all gotta start somewhere. P.S. - cheap alternatives to buying new taillights? (spray orange to red, smoke spray, ?) |

Not for nothing, but that would be considered rice and you would be ridiculed. Not that that would matter, it is your ride. But I would at least save enough money to at least buy a muffler with the features that you are looking for. Don't get too cheap with the mods.

A tip doesn't really make the sound any different. It just causes the people behind you to laugh at you. (believe me, they will) DVS is right, save up and get at least a muffler cuz about 2 months after getting the tip, you'll say to yourself, "Gee golly, I wish i had an exhaust." Everyone goes through a "rice" stage... Some people don't ever grow out of it. And once you do all the cheap stuff, you'll say to yourself, "jeepers, why did I spend money on all this useless stuff. I can't count the amount of stuff I wish I HADN'T done to my car. I painted my taillights red, I used to have red and amber taillights. THis is what it looked like.

THANKS! I had a feeling that was the answer, but I just wanted to make sure. Can you guys recommend a good brand to go with? Once again, I'm not looking for an outrageous sound, just something a little deeper, if you know what I mean.
P.S. - how much of a difference, (sound, HP, etc) does a silencer make? --filmfiend81 |

Usually, a bigger muffler gives you a lower, deeper tone, and its a little louder than stock. The smaller, coffe can type mufflers are much louder, but the sound is not as low. My friend got a Tenzo universal muffler for around $120 for his accord. But since we live in Massachusetts, not many places would put it on, (because with universal mufflers, you have to weld on hangers, and weld the pipe on). But we did find a place that did it for $150. So thats about $270 total. I got a Tenzo rear third section that was made specifically for the 92-00 civic, it came with hangers, and bolted right to the pipe, no welding neccesary, and it cost $230. This is what my exhaust looks like, I have a smaller muffler than my friends. His is low, deep, and not too loud. Mine is louder (but not that loud) and the sound is not as deep.

If your going on something not too expensive you should probably go with the arospeed mufflers . They range from 80-140 and they don't sound crappy unless you take off the cat . This is what i would recommend if your on a tight budget

Thank's GOD
THANKS GOD! I plan on getting that through them soon, my question now is:
I know that universal mufflers require welding to install. Does anyone know the cost to have this done ( I heard about $100-150?!?) |

It basically depends on where you live. Here in Mass, it'll prolly cost more than it would in Florida. Just call around, and look for the best price. Some places won't put it on because its not thier part, and the warrenty would be messed up.

Okay, let me get this straight...(I also want an exhaust)...if I get a tip that's really big, it won't sound like some peice of crap all high pitched and everything. What I want is an almost stock sound, just a tiny bit deeper.

No, if the muffler is really big, you should get a lower sound cuz the exhaust gas resonates in the muffler, so the bigger the muffler, the lower the sound should be. The tip doesn't matter too much. The only way it would sound crappt, is if you take out the resonator on the exhasut pipe. It's the part of the exhasut pipe that gets a little bigger, then alittle smaller. it should be close to the front of the exhaust system. if you take that off, it'll sound like two pieces of cardboard banging together.

So, it's bigger muffler, not bigger tip?

yeah, well that's my opinion. I have a really big tip (you can see it above) and it sounds really good. Not the lowest sound, but it's not whiny or high at all.
