Should big choccie bars be banned?
following on from the thread Yogs posted re Mcds winning that case, heres a
I read in the local paper today......FAMILY-SIZE chocolate bars, jumbo packets of crisps and giant burgers must be banned before they kill us, a nutrition expert has warned. The trend towards bigger portions in snacks and junk food - which are high in saturated fat - is setting back efforts to cut obesity and heart disease, Dr Malcolm Law told a conference. He called for the end of buy one, get one free offers in supermarkets and fast food chains, which he said encouraged us to eat too many fatty foods. Coronary heart disease contributed to 21 per cent of deaths in Britain, said Dr Law, an epidemiologist from the Wolfson Institute of Preventive Medicine in London. 'We need to reduce portion sizes to help cut cholesterol, which will help reduce heart problems,' he added. 'Although average cholesterol levels have been decreasing, this is not at a fast enough rate and we need to tackle it now.' The average adult had a level of six, compared with 2.5 in rural China. Dr Law said: 'It's up to the Government and the Food Standards Agency to start talks with the food industry about cutting portion sizes.' The process would take time because the industry would inevitably be hostile. But Dr Law was adamant that most people would not notice if their chocolate bars and hamburgers suddenly got smaller. 'Many people will eat as much as is on their plates,' he told the Royal Society of Medicine's Food For Thought conference in Central London. 'Evidence from a recent trial in the US showed that people don't feel more hungry if you give them a slightly smaller portion.'

Banning isn't necessarily helpful, but it is disgusting how much crap food is out there. - And how much cheaper it is than good food.Japanese in Japan have low rates of heart diesease - despite smoking like chimneys. They move to a "Western" country, and their cardiac risk becomes the same as the rest of that country. So diet and lifestyle have a huge effect on health. It's a deeper problem than can be fixed by just banning 2 for 1 offers though; it necessitates a total change in the way we as societies view food, and different types of food.

it's a hell of a lot cheaper to budget a weekly trip to the grocery rather than daily trips to McD's. just don't buy bullshit like triple frosted shit flakes and soda and crap and you'll be fine |

It comes down to the same principles as the 'smoking'argument, and yet,on the one hand we are jumping all over smokers for their self-destructive behavoiur, and on the other,we are building play areas in hamburger joints to encourage kids into bad eating habits from a young age................
Our local school is fighting an uphill battle to encourage kids to eat well. They moitor what the kids are bringing to school for lunch, select only the healthier options for the school shop, and constantly encourage the kids to eat fresh fruit and vegetables.........It doesn't seem that long ago that parents took responsibility for that kind of thing.Thesedays parental responsibility is rapidly becoming an oxymoron. |

Crap food is often cheaper as a short/immediate-term thing. Just look at how much fruit costs compared to prepackaged crud in supermarkets.
