Car revs by itself

88 Accord LXi revs by itself when it's at idle. Revs between 1250 to 1450 RPMs I think and then drops back down and does it over and over, and it's annoying. I just put a short ram intake on a few months ago and it didn't start until about a month ago. My cousin's 5th gen civic just started doing it right after she put her exhaust on a few weeks ago also. Anyone know what's wrong?

lol alot of cars do that. it could be 2 things that i can think of. the first, your car is cold, and your ecu is just trying to keep enough revs until your oil is warm and viscuous enough to maintain a steady idle without dying. the other thing could be that since you modified the way your car gets air/relases exhaust, your air/fuel ratio is not stock anymore. therefore, your car might have a hard time maintaining a perfect idle because its getting more air than its programmed for, and has to compensate by varying your revs automatically to maintian a balanced air/fuel ratio.


in any case, im pretty sure that your car shouldnt do that. im not a mechanic or anything, so i would get a professional opinion.

I dealt with this problem about a month ago, on a friends girlfriends car. First of all check your breather hose for blockage/breaks ect. Second check your intake to see if there's fluid laying in it, if there is clean it out thoroughly, Open the butterfly and spray with I. cleaner. Also see if the ecu is throwing codes.

that happened about a week ago to my friends 3000gt after he replaced the clutch reservoir. turns out his air sensor was just unplugged.

Mine did that from 1000 to 4000 all the time. My neighbor is a mechanic at the Honda dealership and he helped me fix it. Behind my intake manifold/throttle body is an idle control sensor. Keep is mind this is a B-series and I'm not positive about yours. Anyways there is this plastic screw thing that is spring loaded in the housing of the sensor. Vibration tends to back this out causing a internal vacuum leak. You need a mirror so see in there unless you take off the intake manifold. Its a bitch to get back there and thread it back in but I did and screwed it all the way in and the idle went right back to normal. My neighbor said this is a very common Honda problem and he sees it about twice a week in the shop. About two months later it idled ireg. just a little and I had a vacuum line leaking which I replaced and it fixed it again. Maybe this could be it but what other people suggested could be the problem too. A bad sensor would definatley cause that. Have your ECU checked out too.

Took it to honda last week and they foung a hose leak, replaced that and it's fixed, thanx though guys.
