The GT40 dosn't count.
A: its either was a race car or a Super car, B: The only thing American in it was the money and the engine. The Chassis was a British design, and the car was developed and raced by Ford Europe. And most of the people who worked on the car and who raced it where either European, New Zealanders or Australian.

it was a streetcar, maybe not first, but it had to be to race in LeMans.
yes, it was a Lola first, but then... the viper doesn't count either, arent they made by dodge? you know... a division of daimler-chrysler... does it really matter? second choice would have been an A/C cobra, but that;s just shelby's version of an A/C Bristol that was running an old 6cyl engine and at the end of it's lifespan as a car, then shelby revived it by dropping Ford's brand new 260 in it. but, then it doesn't count either. it's british too |

The problem is that there is so much cross platforming these days you can't always be sure who made the parts in your car. |

Wrong, designed by Eric Broadley as the Lola GT.

What are you talking about? Dodge made the viper long before it was part of Daimer-Crysler.

Corvette Z06 or any Viper from 95-2003. I would pick the GT40 but with all the contriversy it is starting, I will lay off it.

For it to be an American sports car it has to be have been designed and built by Americans in America. The GT40 wasn't. The Viper has proobly done the most in the last 10 years to attract the attention of the media to the existance of American "sports cars" but it lacks the history and breeding of the Corvette. I consider the Corvette a little more refined, and more in the spirit of my idea of what makes a good sports car. The Viper is an awsome car, but lacks a certian finese in the way it does things.
