What should idle RPM be at?

how fast should the engine be running when it is idle? Shouldn't it be around 1000 revs/min? When i start my car, it idles around 2000 revs/min. However after driving a while and when it come to a stop or something, it does go down to around 1500 revs/min. Is there some way of setting idle RPM though?

The normal idle should be between 600 and 1000 RPM. However, when warming up at "fast idle", don't be surprised if it hangs around 2000 RPM, maybe even higher. Depends on engine, ambient temp, and myriad other factors. As long as it idles slow at operating temperature, I wouldn't worry.
