Banana facing extinction...or so they say!!

BANANA FACES EXTINCTION

The banana could be slipping towards extinction, experts fear.

Scientists believe diseases could wipe out the world's most popular fruit within 10 years.

They say the banana is at risk because there is little genetic difference between each one.

The banana is a staple food for millions of people in Africa - and is hugely popular in Britain because of it is healthy.

Ripe

"Each is a virtual clone, almost devoid of genetic diversity," said a report in the New Scientist magazine.

"And that uniformity makes it ripe for disease like no other crop on Earth."

"In some ways, the banana today resembles the potato before blight brought famine to Ireland 150 years ago," the report said.

Dr Emile Frison, head of the France-based International Network for the Improvement of Banana and Plantain, was quoted as saying banana diseases were becoming increasingly difficult to control.

"As soon as you bring in a new fungicide, they develop resistance."

Research

Dr Frison believes genetic engineering may be the only answer.

But the large producers have so far refused to get involved in such research because of the cost - and fears that consumers will be put off by a genetically modified banana.

 ok
