2004 WRX STi = 2.5L

2.5L > 2.0L

2.0L restriction on displacement

Therefore, 2004 WRX not legal by WRC regs?

Or are they keeping a huge batch of the 2.0L motors to swap in? Do they have to homologate the motors with the car, or just the 'car' itself?

Jay,
I am pretty certain that the WRC cars will still be running the 2.0 engine, since there are certain restrictions enforced by the FIA.
The WRC car and the WRX are not that related, and to the best of my knowledge there are no standard production requirements calling for a 'street' car of similar spec less the safety features and on-board systems.
Remember, the WRX is after all the street car, and I am sure Subaru will have to keep producing the 2.0 engine for some markets(I know is South Africa the WRX is governed!! ), so I am sure they are not doing away with the WRC/FIA spec engine.
They are probably going to a bigger engine in some countries to meet the demand for more HP?
Another thing I know from many years working in the motor industry, the engine mount is the part that changes most often to accomodate the different size engine, the body is usually the same.

Wonder what Phil, Alex and Guido have to say(not forgetting the rest).

Ray

In Belgium fe. they are selling the Scoob with 3 power variants - for taxing reasons, so I think they will stick to the 2.0l unit - certainly for WRC.

The US gets the 2.5 RS (no turbo0, the WRX 2.0 and the 2.5 STi. Tso is right, the 2.5 STi was desgined for the US market, both because of emissions and the fact that the larger displacement engine has characteristics more suited to general American tastes (namely more low-end torque)

There is an article on Autoexpress that in 2007 there will be a 350bhp Impreza WRX STi with a 3 litre, flat 6. Any truth behind this?

There will be one when Subaru can get the transmission problems sorted out.
They have been playing with it for a while now but they were having some problems with the transmission and this is delaying the car going to manufacture.

Yo freak(ray) , why don't Subaru just get Getrag to build a gearbox? Getrag make some solid gearboxes. Also, I hope these teething problems don't make Subaru NOT build the car. I am looking forward to this beast, here is hoping that the styling of the STi8 does not change (interior improvements are welcome, but not significant improvements that would bump up the price too much), and I hope the tuneability is there (I'm sure it will be).

But if the only thing stopping this car from going into manufacture is the transmission, then surely when that is solved the car will be ready to be produced, but that will be a lot earlier than 2007? Well I suppose that is good.
