does any1 kno where i can get the extra hp chip? ive talked to some1 online and said that their friend had put a new ecu, chip, and some other things and said it was doin about 240-250 hp. this a good way to go or not?

240 to 250 hp? Did he mention to you that one of those "other things" would be a supoercharger?

Did this guy just add up all the individual estimated HP gains from all his mods and quote that value to you or did he actually dyno it? For the sound of it, he did the former. In that case, he might be pulling 220 at the crank without a supercharger... MAX. A chip won't net you 40 HP alone and you can't just add up HP values for all your mods and quote that value for your car's HP, it just doesn't work like that.

Not to diss on your friend but 240 or 250 out of a chip is a hell of an increase, when normally a chip usually at best gives you about a 10hp or slightly more increase and it also removes the rev limiter (well, at least some do).

I've never seen a chip that can take you that high, there might be some out there but I haven't seen them. Anyway I know the JET performance makes a chip, you might wanna check them out.

well it wasnt jus a chip, he has basic stuff like intake, exhaust stuff like that. even with that u think it end up anywhere near that?

Possibly, what kind of car did he have and did he get the chip programmed before he added the bolt ons or after?

It does make a difference whether he did or not.

96 gle i think, i kno he got the ecu and the chip round the same time, i would think that he would have gotten the intake and all the first

The only way you're going to be getting 240+ HP out of the 3.0L Max VQ is Supercharging or Turbocharging, or if you've got one hell of a tuned intake and exhaust system that increases its volumetric efficiency beyond 100%.

for a list of Mods available for the Maxima as well as their estimated performance gains. Its not mentioned in the website, but it should be said that the performance gains are the gains you'll get over a stock configuration. Remember, you can't just go through this list, pick out your mods and add the HP figures together. An intake may get you 5-10hp alone, and a y-pipe may get you 12-20hp alone, however, it DOES NOT equal 30hp with them both together, it will be somewhat less. Its more of a square root of the sum of the squares kind of thing (think Pythagorean Theorem).

Not if you already have 222hp, you add the y & b pipe, plus intake, exhaust and the chip and you're over 240, albeit slightly but you don't necessarily need an SC to get there.

This is true, but since we know its a 97, its only got 190hp stock and isn't from that particular family. The 222HP is a result of major internal engine mods such as lightened rotating assembly to achieve higher RPMs (where most of that 222hp comes from) and about 12 more ft-lbs. An intake + y-pipe might get you close to a 20hp increase, and a B-pipe will only free up a few ponies, not enough to feel. The chip will give you the real extra oomph after those mods getting you close to 250hp from 222. But its not going to happen from 190hp. Not only that, but you still have to shave off 10 to 15% through the driveline.

A chip is a good investment interms of power, but as for that guy's claims that he's running 250hp from 190hp is absurd. If he's got the 222hp version, then I take it all back.
