if you have a DX you can simply do the MPFI (multi port fuel injection) and get almost the same HP as a SI. you can also swap in either a sohc vtec 92-95 Si/EX or 96-00 Civic EX engine and use it with your tranny. the DX tranny sucks
if you wanted to upgrade you could get an 88-91 EX (sedan) auto tranny check out the engine section at www.4thGenerationCivic.com for links on how to do the sohc vtec swap

Ami, would I need to replace my axles? And what sort of Vtec controller would I use?

nope. your axels should be good to go. there are 2 ways to activate vtec. the cheapest way is to get a 88-91 Si ECU (pm6) and distro. then you can get an rpm activated switch from Summit for $60. that way is cheap and easy however, i recommend doing it the other way. which is getting a p28 ecu (92-95 Si/EX) for $150. you can try and rewire 50 wires in your harness. or you can skip the head ache and get a conversion harness for $150. with that you only extend 8 wires and the rest is plug and play.
as i mentioned before...check out the engine section. all the links i found useful with my swap are posted there.

i have a 95 civic dx with the d15b7 engine and an automatic. im planning on swapping in a jdm b16 from a 93 civic SiR-II and am wondering if it will bolt up to the automatic transmission? THe same criteria applies above. All i want to do is drop in the engine. I just want to know if my axles are fine as is, will the engine go into an automatic. Also, im not sure if you are aware of this, but to the best of my knowledge the canadian built 92-95 civic hatchbacks came pre wired for v-tec, so am a right in assuming its a simple plug and play type thing? or is there more that im missing?
