Mclaren Honda MP4/5B Finished (5 Pics, large)

Here are the finished pics of the Mclaren MP4/5B. Although you can't see it in the pictures, I had problems with the masking of the fluoroscent red, the mask lines are jagged in places, probably because I didn't clearcoat over the masks first! Anyway, a good tip about doing the masking (since they expect you to use their decals which just don't provide the right shade of red) is to apply the decals first, to use as a guideline. Then, while the decals aren't completely dry, mask off the sections, then just rip off the decals with tape (or your fingers, depending on how dry they are!) and voila! instant masking.

I really didn't like Studio 27's decals, you need to keep the water hot or they will crack and crumble on you. Also, you must use setting solution or at least let it dry for more than a few days or parts of the decal may come off when you take off the clear masking film. The ones I'm talking about are the S27 "Hi Tech" decals, the ones with the removeable clear film. I was going to wax over them but was afraid of the fragility of the decals.

Looks great. Did you use Tamiya Masking Tape? It's about fool proof and i never use clear to seal it.

Apart from the problem with de decals (I now them well since I had the same problem in the F310b as you know) you have ended with a great model, especially knowing that this is your first attempt in F1 modelling.
Hope that you’ve liked to build this one and that I can see for time to time a F1 model in your future projects.

Studio 27 Hi tech decals are very fragile you more or less have to get them in the correct place right away before they break apart, I messed up my MP4/8 and had to revert back to the Tamiya ones but my MP4/5B came out great, just make sure you leave them a couple of days before you remove the film. I applied clear coat over mine, and had no problems. I'll be starting the MP4/7 soon so will see how my 3rd set of Studio 27 decals turn out.

I have to say that F1 just doesn't do it for me, but i can't deny that you have produced another fine model.

Those Hi-Tech decals scare me, i don't think i'll be trying them!

Thanks for the comments everyone. I think I may not have pressed the masking tape down hard enough. It's a curved surface which may have presented some problems.

The painting looks fine from here. I've never tried S27s High Tech decals. Museum Collection has a similar High Tech style decal that I have used, with no problems at all. They might be the way to go in future, should there be a choice.

Hi Dan,

Your MP4/5B looks just great. I'm sorry about the masking or lines not coming out 100% the way you wanted, but It still looks great from here! I hope you'll continue to do F-1 modeling just like Gains and if at this point there aren't enough F-1 enthousiast overhere, we'll show a lesson or two When my series of C-Class DTM's are done, I'm thinking of starting the Tamiya's Benetton B-188
