Reversing milage on odometer using drill

Any of you know how long it will take to reverse my miles to match on how many are on the motor? I recently rebuilt the motor and i want to keep track on how many miles i have on it buy reversing the odometer from 122,XXX back to (current)800 miles. I dont want you people saying its illegal because my car is over 10 years old so milage on my car is exempt. Plus when i sell my car i will tell the new owner of actual milage of the chasis. I'm NOT a crook or a liar so i am not doing this for bad purposes. So any of you tried the drill method on the speedometer cable...how fast can i do it and how long will it take? Should i go backwards on the drill or fowards? I dont want to mess up my gauge cluster...

It shouldn't break if you drill it either way with my experience (I don't clock cars i used to change speedos on my old car coz they kept on breaking), but it will take a long time to do so

cheerz

Okay, here's the trick, you dont need to use a drill, just take off the plastic cover on the fron tof the gauges and take a needle and just move the odometer back, it works perfect, just dont scratch up the numbers cause then it looks obvious, but do it at a corner and it works!!

Take a drill bit put electrical tape on it and reverse it over the smallest number, it takes about an hour to get 100,000 miles off, becareful not to let the drill overheat.

or if you guys look closer theres a gold metal clip that stops the rotation of the digits, take a small pair of needle nose pliers and pop it out, all the numbers will spin freely just set it then replace the gold restrictor clip. I had to do this when I tried to convert into kph but it didnt work anyways

Yes, it just clicks back, its really easy

I do not recomend pulling out the gold clip because good luck getting it back in, its not easy, it can be done, but i was unsucessful.... just use the pin method, its the fastest and works the bext!

I think we need to lock this thread-WHY? because the act of changing the reading is absolutely ILLEGAL and unethical as well. You seem to not understand that it is the chassis that has the mileage and that is what people go by. Anyone who contributes to this with an answer is not doing anyone a favor.

ohh shut-up you act like this is to try to scam people, most people who do it do it for themselves. if you do it to sell a vehicle then its wrong!!

I do it for insurance purposes, i got the lowest possible insurance, which is basic liability and i can only drive 7500 miles a year, and there is no way i can do that with school and work, i go through 12000 at least. This way i do it before inspection time and all works out for me....

Think before you speak up. Most states, if your car is over 10 years old, it is exempt from odometer readings anyways. Second, some states (Utah being one of them) allow th odometer to be set, if the major mechanical parts have been replaced by a certified mechanic. So no, it is not always illigal.

im kinda curious on this now ... the 10 year exemption ... if your car is udner the 10 years when do they take odometer readings?!

im thinking about getting me a 5th gen hatch so i might have to worry about this for a year or two which is why im asking ...

And just to add, jc836 4th gens have been exempt for atleast two years now if you happen to have a 91 or more if its older so its not a big deal ... but dont feel bad cause i didnt know either ... locking a thread is like burning a book dude ... gotta make sure its worth preventing others from sharing about that information before we cross that bridge ... plus theirs lots of unethical ppl that will do crap like this regardless of a locked post or not ...
