Question quick Civic Type R cams question

Ive come across a set of ctr cams for an awesome price on ebay and was going to put them into my 99 civic si. as i was thinking about it the thought crossed my mind that these cams where designed to run in a engine that flows more air them mine does. right now im running the stock b16a2 engine with an AEM CAI and a greddy evo exhaust. if i put these in would they be able to breath enough and how much of a difference would they make? ive heard they make your midrange torque a hell of a lot better and give you about 18-20 peak hp but ive also heard that putting on a header is a must. any thought from you gurus out there? my local performance shops wont tell me shit...

Thx guys.

Not a guru, but here goes. CTR cams alter duration AND lift over regular B16 cams - therefore flowing more gas and air into the pistons. But there is no more air pressure, so an upgrade of fuel/induction system is not neccesary. While header is a good mod to do in general, it should reap quite good gains after the cam swap. All of that, but your next mod after the cams should be some GOOD QUALITY cam gears, dialled in by an expert on a dyno. Hope this helps,
Oz

i would say oz knows what he's talkin about, you would need more air cause that is one of the things the cams do for you is provide more air. but your ecu might not recognize the air and run a little lean, but i am not for sure. just puttin out my thoughts

U'll be fine with ctr cams. It wont effect anything. Get urself a v-tec controller and tune it.

you might want to upgrade your valvetrain too. it's not really necessary w/ ctr cams since they're quite mild compared to skunk2 and jun, but it would be a good thing to modify while the valve cover is off.

Don't you know, it's 10 hp for every sticker, 50 hp extra for every additional inch of rear spoiler behond stock height.

Yeah i would say upgrade the valvetrain. Its just a good idea to do so. I think that if you don't upgrade the valvetrain, you really can't go pass 8k. The CTR cams are suppose to rev to 9k. So you have to make the call on that. If you want to go to 9k or not.

If you want to rev high ...it'll take more than an upgraded valve train.

i heard that its cheap insurance to use type r lma's when using high lift cams. the b16a's lma,s will bind and possibly break when using high lift cams like the civic type r cams or any other aftermarket cam. btw the type r lost motion assemblies cost around $200-$300.
