Disposing of Lacquer Thinner..

Hey guys... so what do you guys do to hold lacquer thinner waste until u can dispose of it, or how do u dispose of it?

This stuff would melt through plastic, so regular paint thinner jugs might not cut it?

looking for a safe way to hold the waste until i can bring it to the recycle center. Glass Jar? The stuff comes in a metal jug but i don't have any of those.

thx

Leave your thinner in a dish, or something with a large surface area.. it will evaporate in a day or two, leaving some paint sludge on the bottom that will dry..

(it's best to leave it outside where animals can't get to it).

I use the same dish over and over..

i might try the evaporating method, otherwise a glass jar sounds good.

Wasn't aware that lacquer thinner needed to be disposed of "properly", you have any more info?

I think I'm going to follow 953k3's example and dump everything bad into a big jug, and empty it into the sink drain outside when it's full..

what you DONT want to do is dump it down the drain..

It's a hazardous solvent...

That goes right into your local stream or river..

isn't CSC biodegradeable?

but seriously, i think it's time to stop polluting this crappy world. I'm going to play it safe and dispose of this stuff properly..

Plus, i wouldn't want to mix all the nasties all together... who knows wut will happen... whos a chemist?

Lacquer thinner contains a heck of a lot of solvents, organic ones like toulene and xylene (which can do a lot of damage once inside you), acetone (used in nail finger remover, very potent solvent), methanol, methyl ethyl ketone (something that's not very available here in the States but used a lot in Britain and other countries, I think they refer to it as white spirits?), and a heck of a lot of others...probably very bad for the environment, I guess, and you! Which is why you should all invest in double filter respirators

Oh, and I read in Scale Auto that (may be true) lacquer thinner only takes 30 seconds to travel to your liver after coming in contact with your skin, so be careful!
