Unhappy 99 cherokee sport drivers window

hi, i have a question i hope someone can answer... i have a 1999 jeep cherokee sport. today i went to roll up the drivers window, ( it has power windows),when it went up, it made a weird noise. since curiosity got the best of me, i rolled it down. it got half way down, and the window just fell into the door! i went home took off the door panel, and really can't find anything except a cable laying in the bottom of the door, and i don't know where it goes. i know this is a common problem, because i was just on some review sites. does anyone know how to fix this, or can anyone tell me how to get a good manual? i bought a haynes manual for it, but it doesn't show anything. i can't seem to find a chilton for it. any help will be greatly appreciated, thanks.

Unhappy Jeep Cherokee Window

I own a 2000 Cherokee and had the same thing happen to me and I took it to the dealership and found out that it was the window regulator which cost me $250.00 with labor

This is EXACTLY what just happened to me, only it is 20 degrees out and I had to drive 10 miles home! I just came in from freezing my butt off for the last hour in my driveway to try to find an answer for where the cable goes. Does anyone know? Has anyone been able to fix this? I really don't have $250 to burn.

Re: 99 cherokee sport drivers window

the only way to repair is to replace the regulator, the whole assmbly comes with the motor and every thing. A new one is about 100-125 bucks, but the regulator is a bad design and they break pretty often.

Unfortunatly I ended up taking my jeep to the dealership it cost $308 to repair they did just as you said and replaced the power window regulator....While i was at the dealership a woman brought her dodge caravan in for the same problem I commented to the clerk that this must be a fairly common problem and it looks like they would issue a recall on this badly designed power window he said they only issue recalls on parts that involve a saftey issue I told him riding down the road and have the window fall down completey unexpected to me should be a saftey issue......As far as manufactuers only putting out recalls on parts that only present a saftey problem that is untrue I have owned Fords and Hondas and both have put out recalls on things that no one would consider saftey problem they were just fixxing a poorly designed part of the car....If it happens again I will try and repair it myself so wish me luck.....

Angry Poorly designed power windows

I just had the same exact problem on the driver's side front door of my 2001 Grand Cherokee. I was able to disassemble the entire thing and noted the white plastic clips at the ends of the two cables coming out of the motor assembly. I could see that the clip at the end of the shorter cable was broken, causing the whole linkage to malfunction. Chilton's and Hayne's don't make a book for 2001 Grand Cherokee and from what I hear, they wouldn't help anyway. So it looks like the general consesus is to replace the regulator, huh? Does anyone know if the replacement regulator comes with EVERYTHING? (cables, clips, and a DIAGRAM?) Please help me if you can.........

Cherokee power window regulator.
LoL ....it pays to be handy.
Search the net you can get OEM window regulators at 2 for $200 for a 1986 to 96.

"Do a search for Grand Cherokee power window regulator"

After 96 I assume there were changes but I'd use the dealership as a last resort.

In my opion when you do the repair just drill the rivets out and use metal screws to fasten the regulator. Or if your a perfectionist and want to re-rivet you will need to get a special in-line riveter I believe.

Here are some links
www.A1electric.com I know they have window regulators for 86 to 96.

Lightbulb Solution

Unfortunately, this problem requires the replacement of the entire power window regulator which costs about 110$(at the dealer). The good news is it is a quick and easy replacement, and it seems that the high failure portion (plastic piece) is now made of metal in the replacement part.

Once you have the door panel off, there are maybe 8 bolts to loosen and one wiring harness to snap apart....thats it. You can be done in
30 minutes.

Tear down:
- Remove door panel
- Remove rubber molding on inner side of glass at window bottom.
- unbolt and Remove glass
- loosen and remove motor and regulator track
- Disconnect wiring harness

Install
- reverse order

Thumbs down unbelievable how cheap this is made

First. I'm very happy to find this forum.
Second, I see that I'm not the only one to have this problem

2-3weeks ago, the right front door window fall down. I found that the cable was attached to the regulator inside a kind of sleeve (made in plastic )

I call my dealer and the replacement part cost $177.00 can. Why this is so expensive. This is because you also receive the motor, the cable, the protectice cable tubing. You cannot only get the regulator itself.

You known what, today, the front door window just fall off with the exact plastic break sound. At the moment I'm typing that reply, I have not check inside of the door but I'm sure this is the regulator. The motor still working well, I ear the cable going back and forth when 'playing' with the window switch.

Should I told you that I haven't try the rear windows.

For me, this is a design problem. This is not normal that so many peoples have this problem and not only on the Jeep Cherokee.

So far, it seem that I will need to buy two complete system.

If someone have another suggestion how to fix it, please let's express yourself

Thanks

Re: 99 cherokee sport drivers window

The "inline" riveter is called a Pop rivet or Blind rivet tool. These run about $20 with rivets in any hardware/tool department or home center.

Welcome to the joys of owning a Jeep... whatever flavor you've opted for.

One of the *best* investments you can make is to get a copy of the factory service manual. Chilton's and Haynes are okay for the more minor stuff but things like the power window regulator are best covered by the factory manual. The factory manual will also give you a little background on system theory (how the thing works) and also provide pictures/diagrams not found in the more common books. I bought mine on eBay and also got a copy of it on CD..... so I can research a problem from the comfort of my desk top.

Not only are the power regulators bad, but the window switches have a tendency to fail regularly; my '00 XJ Sport has an inop front pax window switch......
