I have a new enemy.
Yes thats right, THE CRANK PULLEY BOLT. I am in the process in putting a VTEC oil pump in my car and the crank pulley just won't come off! So far on my list i broke 2 1/4 inch extensions, 1 1/2 inch extension, bent one ratchet, and broke off a large piece of metal off my tranny housing(using the flathead screwdriver method). I've also spent about 30 minutes trying to use the 1/2 inch impact air gun on the bolt with no budging. So i've been a week without a car cause i can't get this bolt off.
This is a heads up for you who are trying to do this at home. I suggest for you guys to go to a mechanic shop and have them use a 1" impact on the pulley bolt. Thats what i had to do last time to get it off, now i gotta go back again. :o

you know i got the same problem right now. i got my socket on there, extension, breaker bar, 4 foot pipe on the breaker bar. my breaker bar was bent so much, i thought it was gonna snap in half. i even put an impact on it. same thign with me when i tried to jam a screwdriver in the flywheel. i kinda just gave up. idk what to do anymore, oh and right now my car is on jackstands so i cant take it to a mechanic.
lets just say, a belt broke and i bent all my valves, hope i get my b18a pretty soon, i am civicless rigth now |

my uncles gonna help be take mine off. hes got this tool that is more or less just a super heavy duty belt that tightens down around the pulley and then wedges against the ground, the pulley absolutley will not move an inch. then he has the largest impact sockets known to man and a six foot steel bar.....that sucker is coming off or breaking one.

I would say try heating the bolt with a torch... but don't burn anything...
Leave some WD-40 sitting over night perhaps?

...the first time I had to do this I was doing a mini-me....had the whole damn head off and all that...couldnt get it off...had my friend bring his gun from his shop...wouldnt do it... went back and got his boss's gun...wouldnt budge..... put the whole damn thing back together..drove to his shop..hit it with the small gun and came right off....hand tightened it and drove home... guess I didnt have enough air pressure..
bah..second time, zc on a pallet....couldnt get the damn thing off.....me being ghetto, decides I'm just gonna hack up the bottom of the timing belt cover with a dremel and pull the cover up and out from behind the pulley..it actually worked I got the belt on no problem....i half ass covering the hole in the bottom of the cover and never had a problem hehe... anyway, those are my stories...go to a shop

dont heat it with a torch. the crankshaft is heat treated to be stronger if you heat with a torch you can weaken it

your honda dealer has a special tool the fits inside the large hex shape hole in your crank pulley, and large enough impacts that will break the bolt loose, do like marked 01 says get it broken loose and hand tighten it to take home...
gunnmen01 kris ...............Pulley bolt = ..............OMG i never laughed that hard.......

Civicracer, the reason why i am putting a "vtec" oil pump is because the one in my car took a crap on me, it starting leaking oil through what looks like a crack in the housing. So if it breaks, upgrade it! And yes there is a difference in the (D16z6)vtec oil pump vs. the non-vtec (D16a6). D16a6 : 11.6 gallons/minute@ 6,250RPM Part# 1500-P06-A01 D16z6 : 11.9 gallons/minute@ 6,000RPM Part# 1500-P06-A02 Even though its .3 gallons more at lesser RPM, it should still help out at higher RPM applications...
