Question about Model car shows!!
What is your opinion on the president of a model car club winning about 5 first place trophies in different categories and 6 overall trophies at his own clubs model show. This happened recently at a show in Massachusetts a few months ago. Should the president limit his entries or should his entries not even count at the show.
Other club members also won various awards for their items. Thanks |

Hi,
I'm president of the Dynamic Modellers Club, scale and figures modeling club in Belgium. I CAN'T accept that a president won prizes at his own show-contest. It MUST be forbiden.I saw the same thing at the Sabena Modellers Club 2 years ago ( in Brussels - Zaventem ). We left the show with a very bad feeling and we were in a bad temper. They received a very unkind letter from us. I never received a reply. This show is definitely deleted from our calendar. I think that at all the shows around the world the president and members of the organisation can't participate the contest. It's a question of integrity towards the contestants. It's my opinion. I hope it's what you expected. Deedlit |

Ya it was real frustrating to see cars that have been in magazines, at this show still taking awards from the "average joe" like myself. I am going to write a letter. If that is the case, they should hold there own inhouse show for club members only.

why not have a class for club members only and then the regular class where club members can't enter? that way they still can compete?
however, if everyone is in the same class, and they have the best model, they its only right for them to win. its not right for them to not be entered either. |

If it was a model contest, it sounds like a suspect result. If it was an NNL style model show, you really can't say much because the voting is done by the participant's, not a panel of home club judges.

If it was a judged contest rather than people's choice (like NNL's where the participants vote), the only way I would allow that to happen were if the judges were not part of the host club. If the judges were all from the club that ran the show, that show won't last long as nobody will want to enter models in it again. Home cookin' just isn't fair. And that's a lot of trophies for one guy, especially a president. If he won them fair and square, so be it...but I think if it was a real contest that he should have only displayed his models.
What show was it? |

Was just a local type show. He was one of the judges also. He didn't judge he own stuff, but one of the other club members did. His stuff been in Scale Auto Mags. So he is not just a local chump. There is no concideration taken for scratch built body kits etc. All they want to see is ProStreet bulls**t that everybody and their brother has built.

Seems suspect to me. It should be limited to only a couple of entries per person. If they where peoples picks it would be OK to win the prizes, but if he was a judge i'd be asking some questions....was his models really that good ??

I've had models featured in SAE and Model Cars mag, can I not enter a local contest? I'm the VP of the Suncoast Model Car Club, I build 1-2 models a year, compete at my own club's events (NNL style), and have 4 other members who's works have been published. I truly believe my club has a reputation of creating super competitive builders that attracts awesome builders from out-of-state to our little hobby shop based show every father's day. We used to judge our contests and got some heckles from the wanna-be builders, one saying we were a "click". Our reply was, join the "click" and become a better builder. I don't pull any punches when it comes to talent I've developed for 30 years. If you can't hack being beaten and would rather whine than learn, don't compete! When I get beaten I shut-up and take notes!! The level of competition at shows is based strictly on the talent of the builders. How many people want to see "average joe" models at a show? Do you want to swim in the shallow end of the pool forever? When is a builder not an "average Joe"? |

It was when I already had more than 20 years of modeling experience and had been making car models for at least 8 years, and I was still beaten by 18 year old kid, who presented a flawless model. It was judged by all participants, and I even voted for his as the 1st in the category. As long as judging system is fair, I wouldn't bother the title of the participant, his background and experience, or how many to enter. Also, luck plays a big role in contest. If there's killer replica in the category you are competing, you have less chance of winning, but if not, other people would look at your model, and say, "Damn, his is better than mine." It's just a relative thing. Besides, there's always another chance next year. Here are some of the tips, I learned. Choose body color carefully. Yellow stands out, metallic gets attention, and many people know silver and black are difficult color to do right. Use contract of gloss and flat color effectively in the engine bay. Make flat paint very flat, by adding flat base or applying flat coat. Chrome foiling job gets a lot of attention. Carbon fiber deckling job gets a lot of attention. Get to the show early, and place your model at the best position on the table. Don't leave the table too long, but come back and check your model. Some People want to talk to you, and he could be one of the judge. Although it's nothing to do with your model, your personality counts. There're many more, but if you can't win, try to think what's missing. And it's not necessarily just a painting or detailing job. |

I'll add some of my own; Color - Red, Blue, Black and Yellow are sure-fire eye-catchers. Silver, well chosen two-tones, and base-color candies are good too! Avoid - dark earth-tones, green, and white. If you build racecars you'll notice they all have these popular colors - for a reason!! Matte finishes I use up to 9 different blacks under the hood of a factory-stock replica. Parts of cars are forged, cast, stamped, spun and drawn. Each of these processes creates a different surface that reflects the same paints differently. Add in numerous vendors for those parts each painting with different brands and mixtures, well, the colors aren't uniform even when they are the "same". Other areas that need differ that mattes are interior dashes, carpets, door panels, seats, tires, suspensions, and exausts. You can use the same paint for these items and add matte topcoats to diffuse the gloss. Presentation Build bases!! Raise your car up from the table (if allowed) and get it closer to the judges eyes. It will also bring attention to the car no matter where it is placed on the table. Make a BRIEF "showcard" to place with the model explaining what went into building it (base kit, aftermarket, scrathbuilt items, time). All of my contest cars are displayed on rotating bases (I have 5) at shows with mirrors underneath. I have decorated each base in the manner of the car going on it (street machines have a "billet" base, race cars have a NASCAR fuel filler base, etc. etc..) or replicate the scene at a major 1:1 rod show (simply red felt base, ropes, and showcard). Audience OK folks, don't go to an NSRA (Street Rod) show and expect to win anything with a Rice-Rocket with a body kit! The audience won't always appreciate the subject and thats a consideration at NNL meets. A judged contest usually means a more enlightened eyeball looking at your work and a deeper knowledge of what it takes to do things you've done. I'll tell you straight-out, I look at the work much more than model. Network If someone just creamed you at a show, ask them how they did the things that won! If you get past you bruised ego, you'll know darn well why someone beat you. Ask questions, meet other builders in your area, attend every contest within 200 miles of possible, join a club, get together with other builders and share the knowledge pool!! NEVER, EVER GET DISCOURAGED!! Even when you leave a model show empty handed, you either learned or been inspired....KEEP TRYING! |
