I turned my car on in the morning and drove about 20 miles, I turned it off when I got home. A left again and drove about 1/2 mile and turned it off to watch my brothers soccer game, when it was over I drove back home (1/2 mile) but before I got home I ran over a puddle of water and my car turned off completely. I coasted it for about 3 or 4 blocks untill I came to a complete stop. I sat there for a while and thought maybe the water went into my cold air intake so I would let it drain for a bit. I tried to turn it on but all the engine did was just turn over but not start. After about the 4th time of trying, the car finally started but theres a noise coming out of the engine compartment and sounds like a knocking sound. It repeatedly knocks as the car idles and when you give the car gas, it knockes faster. It's a 1996 Integra Special Edition, it has the normal LS engine auto. If anyone can give me info about what the problem could be, I would appreciate it.

if you drove through a deep puddle then chances are you intake sucked up water. what you could try to do is take off the intake at the throttle body then try and start it, see if it knocks
also i woould suggest changing your oil because if you did suck up water and water got into the combustion camber then it probably seeped down past your rings and into the oil pan. you should do this before you try and run your car. if it still knocks, then the only thing i can think of is just run the car for alittle while and see if it goes away. myabe like the heat of the engine will dry everything up and then it might run fine. but i say only do this if you have no other option |

if you thought the car sucked up water/hydrolocked, then why did you try to restart it?
you should have had it towed home, removed the plugs, let it dry out for a day or so, change the oil to remove the water, then fired her up. any trapped water in there probably compressed a valve into something that no longer represents a valve and is causing the tapping sound as it hits the piston. or the water got into the oilpan after draining down, rusted some components and caused you to spin a rod bearing. or you compressed the water and bent a rod, or even broke it. |
