gas gauge problem

Anyone else a problem with the gas gauge not giving a actual reading? It seems when I am almost on E the gauge jumps up to one half point and slowly goes down again. When I turn off the car the gas gauge is the only that doesn't move it just stays in the same place

The gas guage reading is controlled by a floatation device attached to the fuel pump assembly located inside the gas tank (for fuel injected models). If you have some experience and a little bit of patience, the gas tank can be dropped and the fuel pump assembly removed. I just put a new pump and lines on my 88Z the other day. It took all day, but it's really not that bad. A Chilton's book makes it even easier. The floatation device and its electronic componenets are very delicate, so its possible that with 14 years of work (your car is an 88 right?) that the assembly may be faulty. I guess the best course of action is to first check the integrity of the wiring that leads to the fuel pump assembly. If it looks good, then you may have to replace the fuel pump relay assembly (this is what houses the floatation device and it's components. It sounds like a lot, but its really quite easy. Just be sure to check the wiring first, before you decide to drop the tank. I hope that this helps. Good luck.

PS: If you do end up dropping the tank and pulling out the relay assemby, it is also a good idea to replace the fuel pump. They dont last forever and they aren't too expensive for a new one. Just a bit of preventative maintenance.

Well, i'm a jackass. I just saw that your cav is an 98. Based on that, I would definitely say that you have a wiring problem that leads to the fuel pump relay. The car is too new to have a faulty fuel relay. There has to be a loose wire that controls the gas guage that is causing this problem. Good luck.

well i think it might me something faulty with alotta them I own a 99 cavi coupe and it does the some thing jumping around and my HVAC and guage lighting has went out but I hear there is a recal about that
