Port and Polish, please help
Port And Polish????
Does anyone here have a port and polish done, and if so what are the results?, This guy I know that does engine work said he ported the heads on someones Max. Would this be a waste of money or would it give these cars serious gains??? |

port and polish
a port and polish job involoves removing the heads, valves and the like in the heads. when your porting the heads you take and match the intake runners with the heads. after you've smoothed the lines you then move into the area right behind the valves( where the air and fuel flows) and enlarge this area and blend into the runner. If your really anal about porting it you then move into the area in the combustion chamber and smooth this out so that you have a clean burn when the spark plug ignites. your biggest gains from porting are only in the high rev range, which unless your motor is blown or you strictly race it it's really not worth it. plus you can port your heads yourself with a die grinder and a good abrasive kit like one from summit racing. expect to spend plenty of time on each head about 6-10 hrs (beginner) on sm block 350 heads. have fun and remember to b carful and not take out too much. really careful. and you dont want to hit your valve seat area either. alot work for a little gain.

Thanks guys, nobody answered this question a couple of months ago when I first posted the thread. See I port and polished the heads on my Chevy Beretta that I had in Highschool and it gained alot of top end pull. I figured it would do the same for the Max, if not better. Anyway thanks for the response

I think port and polishing the Maxima engine is pretty much worthless for the money you spend because they did such a good job in the design to begin with. The Extrude Hone process just smooths out natural flow passages, polishes them, and makes them slightly larger, but interms of actual ports mating at the heads, I think they are already well matched, which is the purpose of Porting and Polishing.

It does promote some gains in hp because of the higher applications or more stress/boost you can apply now that the engine's internals have been ported/honed to allow better cooling. The process in itself isn't like a turbo you drop in and you see the numbers right away, it's more like it's just a part of the overall equation.

But overall, if you're not boosting, its not going to be that significant of a gain. You get more gains from using a drop-in K&N air filter.
I agree its more of an "overall performance" thing and would be up there with lightening the pitons and conrods (which Maxima did to the VQ for 2k and 2k1 models for the 222hp) and knifedging the crank counterweights. None of these things is significant in and of itself, but when put together with other high performance mods, there are benefits. I'll put it this way... unless you have money to burn for firewood, porting and polishing a Maxima's heads isn't worth it. You might as well do a trade in with a 2k3 Max and get 255hp stock. There are many more mods that will net higher gains than porting and polishing that should be done first, namely an intake, Y-pipe, and a MEVI. |

How much do you guys think a port and polish would cost on a 4th gen? I had it done to my chevy beretta and it gave major gains to that car, but I know you can't compare a beretta to a Max, but when I had gotten my engine rebuilt on the beretta, they ported and polished for me because My dad knew the guy from work. So in other words, I didn't pay for it
Man guys I havn't been around for a few days because 2 asshole Mods banned me twice for some drama in another topic forum, but the Mod God Igor bailed me out twice and is doing an investigation. So Maximus is back baby
