Problems Starting

Everytime I crank my Jeep it takes me two or three times turning the key before it would finally crank. I took it too the dealership and they charged me $430 to replace the fuel pump. It still takes me two or three times to get it started but only after it has sat for a few hours. I was just wondering if anyone else has had this problem or if it is common or if the repair guy is jipping me.
Thanks

Re: Problems Starting

Well if the dealer charged you for a fuel pump and the problem is still there than I would take it back and make them fix it right at no charge to you. The only reason they should have installed a fuel pump was the lack of pressure. but if you have a bad connection in the ignition switch than the pump would not work either. Sounds like they mis diagnosed your problem.
When you cycle the key to run, does anything happen? If your dash comes up, than Iwould start by checking you ground and power to the starter. good tight and clean connections.

It might be the fuel regulator why don't you have it check in a shop they will check the pressure with a special gauge they have and you will find out if is good or not

Re: Problems Starting

When was the last tune up. plugs, wires, cap rotor ect. can make a world of difference. grab your wires are they spongey. I have a 94 and when I first bought it I'd crank it for 3-4 min ( not at one time) usually I'd leave my foot on the pedal all the way to the floor. then it start. after it cool down I'd have to do it again. like your. I did a tune up and it stopped. Also is there whte smoke when it starts ? you may have a small head gasket leak. after it warms up the metal expands and the smoke goes away. but you need to push out a liquid in there. before you can get it to fire. I saw this in a friends jeep. hope it helps. get a refund for the pump.

Re: Problems Starting

ucshuff1, try turning the key to the on position, and waiting for the fuel pump to turn off. Sometimes the pressure will bleed off in between starts. Try it and let us know how it works out.
