... of course they have some pretty stiff requirements to make the warranty valied, such as documented flushing of radiator or radiator replacement, but hey! ... if it helps to get a good product, it may be worth it.

... also be aware that different sales areas have different discounts/rebates going on at different times... I missed by two months an addition $250 rebate on the Winny tranny I just bought. Check with your local dealership for deals ... they vary by yearly quarter. This info prob never will be shown on the website.

There's an engine rebate going on right now in the Southeast ... and perhaps elsewhere.

You know when you look up a Windstar its under trucks. Seems like they would put a truck transmission in it.. I know its front wheel drive. The old Areostars were rear wheel drive. I don't think they had many issues with there trans.Except for old age. Correct me if I am wrong.

OEM is expensive, but my FORD tranny that was installed in about 2000/2001 has just over 90K on it.....and no problems.
Reading the numerous posts about problems people have had with some of the aftermarket units has made me not so anxious to cut corners, though the potential cost savings are very tempting.
This is not a repair that one should have to repeat in the life of the vehicle.
This is also a repair, that for the money one lays out, the unit should be a direct fit that works with no modifications, or compatability issues.

As I have mentioned, and 12ounce mentions, getting the cooler(s) flushed is SUPER important.
FORD is real tough on this as they have found that this is a leading cause for come-backs on new units.
They have several TSB's out stressing the importance of, and how to clear out the cooler lines.
They stress that ONLY transmission fluid is to be used to clean the cooler(s), no chemicals.
They call for HOT transmission fluid to be used with a machine that PULSES the fluid through the cooler lines.

It really hurts to shell out money for a "top shelf" replacement unit......I know from personal experience.
However, it is FAR less pain than having to go through the same thing again.

Oh I agree on that. When it comes down to it I think I am going to replace mine from Ford. Its about 1,000 more than the local transmission shop. But the trans shop want to rebuild it or use there after market rebuilds. So My thinking is this have Ford do it one time or take the risk of the trans shop doing it and having them to fix problems until there warranty runs out and i am stuck doing it over again. Oh just a thought on the cooler. Seeing that the radiator is a hot spot as far as trying to cool trans fluid. You have hot fluid going to the rad and its trying to maintain its on temp plus the trans fluid running along the outer parts does not seem to be the best way to cools trans fluid. I have been looking at trans coolers and for the money after a little thinking and inspection you could see the cost of replacing it from time to time to make sure its always doing the best job for the trans. From what I am seeing 25-40 bucks for the trans cooler. So replacing it every few years might not be a bad idea for extra insurance. Just a thought though..
