Power steering problems

I'm having intermitent loss of power-steering on my 2002 Overland. It seems to only happen when parallel parking or manuevering in reverse. I also notice clicking in my steering wheel when I'm turning the wheel back and forth from a dead stop. When I'm steering in reverse I hear some grinding when cranking the wheel right or left. Any help with a solution would be greatly appreciated.

Re: Power steering problems

The first thing I would check is the power steering fluid. Be sure it is at the right level (there's typically a "low" and "high" mark, or "cold" and "hot" mark on the dipstick). If it's low, top it off then check again. Low fluid could indicate a leak somewhere. If the fluid looks full and clean, let us know and we'll come up with some other ideas.

Re: Power steering problems

I had the power steering fluid flushed recently so I'm pretty sure it's not the fluid. Let me know what other problems could cause that, Thanks a bunch!

Re: Power steering problems

Did you have problems BEFORE flushing the steering fluid? I'm curious because I just had a mechanic recommend flushing my fluid but I've never heard of that before. Transmission flushes can cause problems in older vehicles - just wondering if the same is true of steering flushes.

I recommend checking under the hood while turning the wheel fully from side to side. See if the steering shaft is turning or slipping. Check the belt & pulleys running to the steering pump. See if you can pinpoint where the steering column is turning but wheels are not. It could be a connection between the steering column and pump, or the steering pump & rods going to the wheels (I'm not a pro on steering, though - just giving some ideas).

Re: Power steering problems

Yah I had problems before flushing the PS. Thats why I flushed it to begin with. Thanks for the ideas JeepForever. I'll check under the hood as you recommended and see if I can pinpoint the problem and go from there. Thanks again and have a Merry Christmas and Happy New Year!
