Tire recommendations to replace BFG Comp T/A's
Hey Guys,
I could use your recommendation based on your 1st hand knowledge of the last set of tires you bought for your 3000. I need a final selection and your opinion of the experience you had with different tires is important to me. For spirited safe driving, I felt the best tires for my 94 SL were BFG Comp T/A's M&S. They gripped extremely well in summer with great cornering, were not noisy and tracked wonderfully in the 4" snowfalls we get up north of Chicago. Can any one give me a recommendation of tire that they think will perform for this type of driving? The five tires that I have reviewed are: Bridgestone Potenza 750's - too hard of a tire for decent traction when slightly slippery. Bridgestone Potenza G 009 - Very noisy & cornering complaints Goodrich Traction T/A's - Noisy & low tread wear. Many people did NOT like this tire. Goodrich -g-Force T/A - many mixed reiviews. Loss of traction? I can't seem to get a handle on this tire. Anyone have experience with the Potenza RE92's in snow? Falken Ziex-512 95V - no info yet Michelin Pilot Exalto AS - a last minute recommendation, no info yet. I don't want to over-emphasize the winter. It's really not that bad, but I feel that I was spoiled with a tire that could handle the snow so well (infrequently...but always there when needed), and could corner so gracefully at speed and stop on a dime. I never slid in this car. I would like a replacement All-Season High performance tire. Got any tires that compare to what I have described? Thank you in advance for your comments. Any help from you is greatly appreciated. Mark |

Re: Tire recommendations to replace BFG Comp T/A's
i know you said All seasons, but i guess theres no harm in a quick review.
BFGoodrich gForce Sports Wear - Good/Excellent Road Noise - Good Ride Comfort - Fair Braking - Excellent Lateral Grip - Fair Steering Response - Fair/Poor (seem kind of floaty on the highway. almost like they hesitate for a split second when you turn the wheel) Wet Traction - Fair Snow Traction - n/a (have yet to try them in the snow) all in all, a decent tire for the price, but i would spend the extra $10 a tire and step up to something else. Re: Tire recommendations to replace BFG Comp T/A's
could look at tirerack.com choose tires by brand. choose ur brand, than narrow down the choices via size. they give pictures of the tread, along with 90% of the tires have ratings for dry/wet/snow traction/tread wear/and noise

Re: Tire recommendations to replace BFG Comp T/A's
I have The Falken ZE-512 on my Mazda 6 (similar size and weight to a 3000GT SL) and while they are M+S rated, I didn't think they were very good and put my stock wheels back on for the rest of the winter. Stock wheels have some sort of Michelin Pilot on them. I don't like them in the dry, too much tread squirm, but they cut through the ice better. Also, the ZE-512 has been replaced by the ZE-912, but I haven't driven them to know how much has changed.
Since I have winter wheels I'm probably going to be replacing my ZE-512's with a true summer tire once the 512's are worn out.

Re: Tire recommendations to replace BFG Comp T/A's
I can tell everyone right now that the Falken Ziex is crap. Those were the tires I had on the Stealth last year when I had my little bout with the curb. Needless to say, they had around 20,000 miles on them. They weren't even that great in the dry. They were rubbish in the snow.
The Khumo AST that I've replaced them with is great in the snow and pretty decent in the dry as well. I hear the ASX is also decent in the snow. They would be better in the dry than the AST. |

Re: Tire recommendations to replace BFG Comp T/A's
Yes, Tire Rack has good surveys & reviews. I've checked through them also. But getting firsthand info from fellow spirited 3000 drivers is indispensible.
It looks like the natural progression of replacement tire would of been the BFG Traction T/A - but after reading so many reviews that hated this tire I couldn't stand the pressure and bailed. My opinion is this tire is over-rated, it couldn't do what the mfr. said it would and people were crushed by the expectations. Can't get the highly rated Michelin Pilot Exalta as they are H rated only but sound really good. Though, in a previous life had slid through intersections with Michelin's with different vehicles (HARD rubber) and especially Yokohama's with the GT (took those right off and then found the Comp T/A's). Had one set of Toyo's and they were alright. Nothing overly special but a decent performing tire for the price. I'll check into the Khumo's. Might be like the Toyo. The Potenza's are really good contenders though the RE750 is a summer tire and the RE950's discontinued. Leaning towards the RE960AS Pole Position. This tire seems to have a lot going for it. Comments on the RE960's?? Traction, Noise, Performance (cornering, stopping), wear etc. |
