300awhp, stock tranny, upgraded clutch?
I recently got my car dynoed and it put down 290awhp and 306ft/lbs. For the time being I have a stock tranny(newly rebuilt) and a stock clutch. I was planning on replacing the tranny with a shep and doing the clutch at the same time. However, I'm just curious as to what you guys think about me putting in a clutch and keeping the stock tranny for now. The clutch is slipping now when launching and if I'm beating on it for awhile high rpms in 2nd gear slip. The car will be seeing alot more hp and I don't plan on pushing it with the stock tranny. Just curious if the stock tranny with a nice clutch can hold 300awhp without blowing up on the first launch.

It should be fine. I dont know how much "a whole lot more" is, but for around 300 ftlbs of torque I dont think you've got a whole lot to worry about.

As long as you aren't dumping the clutch at high rpms off the line the stock tranny should be able to hold a good bit of power.

Re: 300awhp, stock tranny, upgraded clutch?
Cool, thats what I was hoping to hear. The car will hopefully in the future see between 500 - 600awhp but, for the moment I have a baseline of 300. I'm trying to slowly get all the minor things taken care of so I can really pump the power out and this slipping clutch is just annoying as hell. Any suggestions for a good clutch capable of handling 600awhp and still be somewhat streetable? This car is no daily driver but, it does see a good bit of street driving.

I know the exedy twin plate clutch is popular with cars in that hp range. Just don't know how streetable they are.

Yeah, at that kinda power I dont think you've got a choice. I think you might be able to go with like an ACT 3200 with a sprung 6 puck clutch if they still make them. The exedy twin disks are fucking expensive as shit, but probably your best bet.

Cool, thanks guys. I'm trying to decide between dsmlink or the clutch so we will see what happens. I'll get some videos up sometime soon too...

Re: 300awhp, stock tranny, upgraded clutch?
If the choice is between a clutch or DSMlink, go with a cheap clutch and do both.
![]() The tranny will take the power until the parts fatigue and shit the bed. Even fully built trannies are still 99% stock parts! In your case, the center diff is your biggest liability. They can be bought for 400-500 bucks (I ran Speed Design units, and Shep I believe offers his own version as well). I could swap them with the tranny in the car in about an hour. If you pull the tranny for a clutch swap it's even easier. At least you can see and get at everything more easily. ACT 2600s are good to over 500 whp and cheap. Twin discs hold more power, but the main benefit is being able to actually shift fast. You won't believe the difference. They are expensive though. The one in the EVO cost me around 1800 bucks. There are some ~1100 dollar options for the DSMs, most people seem to run the PTT offering. FWIW I ran the ACT 2600s on my 2g right up to the bitter end, but a twin disc clutch is a very wise investment if you can swing it.
