97 Chevy Pickup Trans Problem

Recently purchased a 1997 Chevy S10 Pickup, 5 speed that experiences a little rough shifting until it warms up and even then shifts a little rough from 2nd to 3rd. Any ideas?

Re: 97 Chevy Pickup Trans Problem

Welcome to AF.

Make sure it has the correct fluid in it and is up to the full level.

If it is the NV trans.

The NV 1500 5 speed and the NV 3500 use the GM Synchronech transmission fluid.
But a different part no on each one and the NV 1500 uses 5% friction modifier with the GM fluid.

You have to keep the right fluid to keep them Synchroizers Happie.

Always check with the dealer and repair manual and owners manual on what fluid they use.

Re: 97 Chevy Pickup Trans Problem

Thanks, Good Idea! Is is possible that any damage has been done to the transmission if the previous owner used or topped with the incorrect fluid? I first thought that I might have a syncronizer problem since if was more noticeable going from 2nd to 3rd. Would the incorrect fluid affect that?

The wrong fluid will sometime mess things up.
I would service it with the correct fluid and see what it does.
Good luck
