aftermarket radio
I have a question about replacing the stock radio. I went to Best Buy today and they told me that I have to buy a 130 dollar harness to replace my stereo. Aparently the odometer and door chime and all kinds of stuff run through the radio harness for some reason and I can't just wire in a new aftermarket stereo. So if anyone has replaced there stereo with a aftermarket to a newer Silverado can you let me know if I need this 130 dollar harness or are they yankin my chain. My truck is a 06 5.3L LT.
thanks

Re: aftermarket radio
Unfortunately they are correct. You may be able to find the part cheaper from crutchfield, installer.com or on ebay if you're planning on installing the radio yourself.

Re: aftermarket radio
well on my 05, some dude at circut city said i can either run the expensive, or the cheap one, he told me that sometimes the truck will have an electrical issue with the cheap one, but not all trucks. I took my chance and used the $10 harness from OEM stereo to Sony, has worked fine for me.

Re: aftermarket radio
I replaced the radio in my 04 with a unit that I ordered thru Crutchfield, they gave me the harness, antenna adapter, and the plate to fill in the dash opening at no extra cost, I did purchase the chime unit to go with it. They also send you vehicle specific instructions that tell you what tools you need and just what you have to remove for installation. Have A Great Day

Re: aftermarket radio
allright I took out my stereo last night to take a look and it looks to me that there are only wires back there just for the stereo and that is it. I am thinking that I can go cheap. Least I hope.

Re: aftermarket radio
I bought the cheap harness and it worked great for my 06 silverado. The only thing was that the acc (red cable) did not work with the harness so I had to wire the stereo with the red & yellow wires together so the stereo is always on unless I turn it off. The door chime I think is the first thing that you would like to get rid off. And as far as I know, the odometer has nothing to do with the stereo.

Re: aftermarket radio
the only thing you will lose is the door chime. and onstar if you have that. the cheap harness will have no problems. the red acc wire just needs run to your ignition harness at the orange or brown 12 gauge wire. i do these vehicle installs on a daily basis.
