ignition modules- price difference

Several people have mentioned the facts that ignition modules on 3.8 can be failure prone., so I started pricing out a replacemnt for my 95 before it goes. There sure is a wide spread on what's out there..$60 E-bay, $160 at the jobber I frequent for their economy module, $320 for the premium one. My question is any idea what the difference is in quality , is it truly you get what you pay for, or something else? The jobber couldn't explain the difference in their line, just made by different manufacturers
Thanks
Jeff

Re: ignition modules- price difference

The new one I got on E-bay at 70$ was made in Mexico, just as the GM original that I removed from my 3.8. ..and it came with the wire bundle with plugs. It was totally similar, carrying the exact same part numbers, and works just as the original worked when new.
..and if I had been interested in reselling, I could have ordered 30 units for $1000 from same supplier...which gives me an idea of the profit local resellers get .
AS I had completely identified the part of the card that was shot, I could have built the equivalent of this specific section with discrete components and installed it around for about 50 cents of electronic components, but that would have been kind of ugly patching .
These units are mass produced and there is absolutely no magic in the electronics contained in those cards, and in no way could a "premium" unit be worth almost the price of a new portable computer with a 120Gb hard disk , batteries and charger, DVD writer, keyboard and 14" flat screen.
So I think the money is better in my pocket.

Re: ignition modules- price difference

just buy them from you local junk yard. bring it home and swap it with yours to make sure it works. most places carry a 90 day warranty...
