Sho

Hey guys, I am currently looking at a 1994 Taurus SHO, it's got the 3.0 v6 with a 5spd and 114K on it. I was just curious if any SHO owners in here could give me some tips on whether or not there is something I should look at in particular on these models. It looks to be in good condition but I havn't got to test drive it yet, we had us a nice ice storm here in Kansas. anyway, any advise is greaty appreciated

Thanks a lot

Re: Sho

ask for maintenance records. There is a rather involved 60k mile service that includes changing the timing chain. If it has been done on time then it has one due soon, if it hasn't had this service done then I'd stay away from that particular car.

Re: Sho

The 60k maintenance (for the 5 speed, it's 75k or 90k for the ATX) also involves checking/shimming the valve clearances.

I don't know that I'd necessary suggest walking away from the car if the 60k hasn't been performed, but certainly consider the $600 or so cost in the price and negotiations. If you opt to have the service performed, consider having a new water pump installed as well as the Crankshaft Position Sensor.

If you are able to check the car over prior to purchase, pull the spark plugs and look for evidence of leaking spark plug well seals. This is a fairly common issue which can lead to a misfire.

Also, there is an issue with the differential that can get expensive and is a bit difficult to get parts for.

The standard Taurus suspension and steering issues exist with the SHO as well so inspect the ball joints and inner and outer tie rod ends.

You may consider visiting www.shotimes.com for other items to consider during the negotiations and inspection.

I had a '93 SHO ATX and if it had been a 5-speed, I might still own it today. I really enjoyed that car, just didn't like the way the ATX shifted. I traded it off for a '93 Dodge Stealth twin turbo, but soon missed the practicality of the SHO so I traded my other vehicle, a Nissan Pathfinder for a '98 SHO. The '98 was not as fun as the '93. The '92-'95 are my personal favorites for the SHO.
