Fuel pump ?

Hello. I have a 1997 Plymouth Voyager with a 3.3L 4 Speed TRans. The van quit my wife after filling the gas tank. I have checked the fuse and relays in the pdc.( fuel and auto shutdowns) They are all good. I have not fuel at the presure check port on the fuel rail. I have the fuel filter off to change it and turned the key on There is no pump noise. and no gas came out of the pump.

My question: Is there anything else that can keep the fuel pump from comming on? Ie sensors, switches, relays or fuses.

The service engin soon light is not on. no codes present. I get a P1698 from time to time but not now. Thanks for listening.

Re: Fuel pump ?

Yes, there is another fuse on the junction block under the dash. Should be fuse #1 9 amps. It's likely this fuse is good because it also powers several other systems. The pump relay is powered by the PCM. Check for power at the pump connector and verify the ground is good. If both are there, time for a pump. Another old trick is to smack the tank with a mallet. If the pump comes alive you'll have to decide if you want to change the pump. I've read this can be a permanent fix or could last seconds.

Re: Fuel pump ?

I don't know if I am checking the power at the pump right.
Should there be power to the pump connector when the key is in the on position? Or will it need to be cranking to provide power?
When I turn the key on and Jump the ground to the power side of the connector will not light my test light.
I do get the chime of the low fuel light when I plug and unplug to the pump with key on. I assume this is indicating a ground.
Also, Where is the rear ground block? I have no clue.

Re: Fuel pump ?

Today I removed the fuel pump relay and the auto shutdown relay. I was checking for power. everything lights up on the positive side. When I hooked the test light to the positive on the battery I got a light on the ground of the auto shutdown. and could not get a light on the fuel pump relay.
Can the pdc come apart to check connections or is the ground coming from the pcm?

Re: Fuel pump ?

Back with more info. I still have no ground at the fuel pump relay. I ran a jumper from the ground on the auto shutdown relay to the fuel pump relay. got under the van. checked the fuel pump plug and wala the was now a ground and power to the plug. I connected the plug and the pump came on. I went and started the van it ran. I shut it off and thought I was done. put the plug lock on and lowered the van. Went to start the van again and it would run very rough then died and will not start again as before. Any Ideas as to where the ground comes from? Which control module connects this ground? The relays still check out good.

Re: Fuel pump ?

Sounds like an ECM. You can pwr the pump manually (with jumpers-u alredy showed the pump works). Don't have a diagram in front of me but the fuel pump, shutdown relay and more get their grounds from the ecm internally. Check the junkyards for ecm-- i got one locally for $30. Also , when key turned on, pump will only activate for 5 seconds with no spin of engine (still the ecm controls the ground)

Re: Fuel pump ?

Replaced my fuel pump yesterday. Waited till the tank was almost empty. Replaced the pump but no luck, won't start. Checked the fuse and relay, both good. Tried jumping the relay and the pump kicks on but no fuel getting to the fuel rail. Tried putting 4 gals of gas but still no luck.
Was thinking....must fuel be in the pump for it to kick on? Maybe a safety feature built-in to prevent the pump from pumping and overheating when tank is empty?
Also, parked on an incline in the driveway but the rear end is on ramps but car still slopes downward. Should I try getting enough gas so it hits the pumps reserve?
Please help...it's my only car and I have to goto work tomorrow!!!
Thanks

Re: Fuel pump ?

Just got another 7 gals of gas and guess what....the car started!! Pump must have some kind of safety mechanism built-in to prevent an empty pump from pumping.

Re: Fuel pump ?

I figured that it would be a control module. Not what I wanted to hear. Not working for a few days. going to try and find an ecm. Hope it helps me. Thanks for the info.

Re: Fuel pump ?

Hello. I finally found an ECM. I waited to find the replacement with an identical part #. Could not find one at any of the part yards within 100 miles. Car-parts found me one for 150. I put the EMC in the car. It would not start. I had to go to work, so I put the battery charger on to make sure the battery had a full charge. it had been sitting for a while. Today after a three day charge. The car started right up and it seem to be running fine. I took it for a 20 mile road trip and all seems to be fine.
I would like to thank all the people that helped me figure this problem out and get the car back on the road. This is a great place. Thanks again.
