Exclamation 99 Montana - a few problems... HELP!

I have a '99 Montana with 149k. Here are the probs....Air Bag light stays lit all the time, both drivers & passengers locks do not work, passenger-side- rear makes clicking noise when breaking (breaks?drums?), and just today the car started humming/whining when I accelerated over 50mph.

Please help!

There's a good possibility that the Airbag Light is being caused by a faulty Seatbelt Pretensioner. It's a device that uses a small explosive charge to tighten the seatbelt when the airbag goes off. I've had this replaced a couple of times now on my '99.

If you have drums on the rear, check for cracks . Mine had developped cracks on both sides and it would make clicking noise when braking . Before all, ....check tightening of the wheel nuts....
First suspect for "humming" is a wheel bearing (hub assembly) . Generally a failed front wheel bearing will change intensity of humming, increasing when you turn in one direction, lessening in the other. Failed rear are less frequent.

Re: 99 Montana - a few problems... HELP!

On most vehicles, the airbag light should come on for @6 seconds, and then go off if the system is working properly. If there is a fault or a problem in the system, the light will remain illuminated, or flash continuously. When the light is on, the airbag will NOT deploy, even in an accident. These systems can only be diagnosed using a scanner designed for the airbag system. The scanners at Auto Zone or the ones that sell for @ $50 will not access the airbag system, only the engine systems (check engine light).
Check out these websites for more info on airbag system.

Re: 99 Montana - a few problems... HELP!

I have had the problem with the airbag light on my old 99 Montana, the problem was the connection under the front passenger seat was loose and had to be just pushed together better. Happened several times. I hope your fix is as simple as mine was.
I also had the problem with the door locks not working. The problem was that under the passenger floor water had seeped under the carpet from the heater/ airconditioner drain ( the outside engine compartment drain hose had fallen off and water was being blown back into the passenger compartment). The wire harness is under the floor and I bet one or more of your connections are coroded and have broken. Peel back the carpet and take a look. Dealership will want at least $125 and not fix the real problem of the drain tube, only for it to happen several months later (learned the hard way), then I fixed it myself.
Hope this helps.

Re: 99 Montana - a few problems... HELP!

The solution to the air bag light and the electrical problem caused by the water on the passenger side was the same problem I experienced and PKA1 posted the same solutions that worked in my case as well. Loose wire under driver seat for the air bag light and wet corroded connection under passenger carpet for the door lock problem. Good luck.

Re: 99 Montana - a few problems... HELP!

I too have a 99 montana, and my airbag light is on as well. I assume it would not deploy in an accident, which I don't have a major issue with, I would just like to get the f$&#g thing running right (transmission issues). My airbag light came on after I had a tiny fender bender, and it pretty much has stayed on ever since!
