Painting joint lines such doors, hood, boot etc... (How to)?

Hello,
I was going through the tutorials and FAQ and I couldnt seem to find anything on painting the joint lines around doors, hoods, boots, fuelflaps etc on the body.
Can someone give me an overview of the best way to do it?
Is it gloss or flat black used generally?
And what colour could be used to make it more subtle, it it was say, going to be on a carbody covered in a decal scheme?
Thanks

We commonly refer to them as panel lines, here is a link to Alex Kustov's tutorial on the subject:

Alex's tutorial is excellent. Notice that he does not use straight black as you were thinking. Black is far too contrasting for panel lines on anything other than the absolute darkest colors.

You mentioned that you are doing a car featuring decals. You'll need to make a separate wash for each decal color that crosses a panel line as well as the car color(s) for satisfactory results.

Another option is to do what aviation modelers tend to do. Gray and Raw Umber artists oils thin very well past what would be considered a wash into what would be termed a glaze -- a more or less clear thinner with just a tint of color. This allows the real color underneath to show but slightly darkened. You can thus use a single wash/glaze for all your colors including the decals. Ask an aircraft modeler buddy to help you out if you are interested in going this route.

Washes can enhance more than panel lines. Washing and its opposite, drybrushing, are a great way to enhance interiors, engines, and chassis.

Remember, be sure your wash is compatible with the paint or gloss it is going on. And, practice, practice, practice! It would be a shame to ruin a model when it's near completion.
