no code reader available 2000 safari van
2000 gmc safari 6 cyc vortec 85,000 miles
is there a way to get the code with out having a code reader? van stopped yesterday and won't start today. it will crank as long as i keep the battery charged but it won't fire. new spark plugs, wires, cap last winter. oil change last week along with new "s" belt. the engine light came on a couple of days ago according to my wife. was going to take it to have it read today and it would not start. any suggestions are more than welcome

Re: no code reader available 2000 safari van
Has your van ever had a new fuel pump yet? It is about due....Check fuel pressure with key on- needs to be near 60 psi-- can you hear it running for 2 seconds when you turn the key to "RUN" try banging on the fuel tank if not- it may come on-- and start-- then you'll know what you need to do if it does...........Engine code would not stall the engine- most likely unrelated to the no start problem..

Quote:
No, a scan tool or code reader is the only way to retrieve DTC's on an OBDII equipped vehicle, (1996 and newer). Try squirting a little carb cleaner in the air intake and see if it will start. If it does, you have a fuel problem. Post your results and we'll help you diagnose the problem. |

sorry it has taken me this long to reply but i couldn't get logged back in. it ended up being a distributor cap and rotor. put the new ones on and it fired right up and has been running fine since. thank you for your suggestions
