Short shifter ?'s

Question to all: Is there really a difference / improvement in getting a short shifter? I only used my car about a week before I got deployed, but I had no complaints about the tranny. Is there a big difference in getting the short shifter or is it just a subtle difference? ( i.e. only a 1" reduction in shifter throw. )

I'm not a dummy, I'm just trying to find out all I can.

Short shifters are a good idea, but only if you plan on racing your car. For norman everyday driving there is really no need for one. You are not under any real pressure to make it from one gear to the next in any real hurry. They absolutly make a difference in shift time during a race, but for an everyday driving vehical there is really no need. Appearence wise all you get is an aftermarket shifter knob for everyone to see for about @150. You can get an aftermarket shifter knob from any auto store for about $20. For an everyday car there is really no need. It doesn't make your tranny perform any better, all it is, is an inch less a person has to reach in the middle of a race. :bonghitte

You probably won't measure the inch from knob stop point to knob stop point. I may not be right about this as I never measured mine before I put in my short shifter, but you're changing the fulcrum on a lever basically. Think of it like a see-saw.

You won't gain much from changing aside from looks except for a crisper, shorter shift.

FYI we have the same shifter as the Evo IV if you're buying a B&M.

It's not hard to install B&M short shifter. Basic tools. Includes instructions with some pics.

Easy. Remove the two screws in the base of your arm rest's lower compartment and the rest is clips. The whole console just comes riiight off.

Then, and I can't stress this enough, REMEMBER THE PLACEMENT OF THE WASHERS ON THE SHIFTER ASSMEBLY. The instructions will tell you what to do from there. It should take between 45-90 minutes depending upon how familiar you are with the car and the shifter assembly.

BTW, I double checked and it's actually the same short shifter as the Evo IV, V AND VI. I'm assuming the VII is the same as well.
