Hub or not the Hub?

I belive my right rear HUB is going out on me. My ABS and Traction lights stay on, I hear a whining noise, and a little wobbley when I start to slow down. A friend and I took the tires off the rear to see if there was any play on the HUB. There was no play but there's a big diffrence between me pushing on it and having the car's weight on it.

My question is, how can I be 100% sure that my HUB needs to be replaced?

Re: Hub or not the Hub?

You might start by rotating tires to front, this may help you eliminate any tire fault vs hub problem. You could also check the condition of rear brakes and parking brake shoes by removing the caliper and rotor for inspection. nearly impossible to detect bad hub by trying to feel for play as far as my experience goes. Can you detect any difference in sound or feel while turning either left or right?

Re: Hub or not the Hub?

you can feel for play with the tire on the vehicle. raise and support car, grab top and bottom of tire and rock back and forth. if you feel excessive play, then start there. if no play felt, then rotate tires as 57chevy suggested. also, does the sound get worse/softer when turning(I.E. on highway curves or turning a corner)? if right rear is suspect, then left turns should make noise worse as the right side of vehicle is loaded more, and right turns should make noise lessen a bit due to left side of vehicle having more load.

Re: Hub or not the Hub?

A shop or dealer with a Tech II scanner can tell you which hub is not sending the correct signal to the bcm.
