Inner tubes in radial tires - safe?

This question came up on another forum in a thread about chrome wheels getting porous and leaking. I suggeted using inner tubes in lieu of replacing the wheels. I have been using this combination on one tire on my 87 for around 4 years now without any problems. My tire had a gouge in the bead so holding air was iffy. Most on the forum are saying it's not a good idea. One said you're putting a gun to your head. That got my attention so I spent some time on the net looking for info and found little but this: http://www.tpub.com/basae/226.htm I wouldn't call that definitive but, it leads me to think it could be ok.

What's your opinion? Can you find any more info about it?

Re: Inner tubes in radial tires - safe?

It will work. However, the faster you drive, the greater the chance of a destroyed tire from overheating. The inner tube causes the tire to get alot hotter than without it. There is alot of friction between the tube and the tire. Also, any piece of grit in the tire will rub against the tube and wear a hole in it.

keep it slow and temporary

Re: Inner tubes in radial tires - safe?

Back in the late 60s when radials first started appearing here, tubes were common with them. I was told that this was necessary because the radials at that time flexed more and had a tendency to leak at the bead. The radial tubes were considerably thicker than the standard tubes however.
If you must use a tube, you might wish to investigate if thicker radial tubes are available/recommended and act accordingly. As Brian noted, heat is also a consideration.
